Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.
Get the appThe ruins of the Convento de San Antón are one of the meseta's finest surprises. The remains of the monastery arch over the camino itself, and you walk through what was once a grand pilgrim hospital. The Antonine monks who ran the order specialized in treating ergotism — a disease caused by contaminated grain that was common in medieval Europe. They wore a distinctive Tau cross, which you'll see carved into the stonework.
The ruins are atmospheric and photogenic. A small albergue has been established in the remaining structures, offering a donativo bed in a genuinely historic setting. Even if you're not staying, pause here — the combination of the arch, the ruined walls, and the open meseta beyond makes this one of the most memorable spots on the Francés.

We planned this part of our Camino intending to stay at the Ruins. When we arrived at noon on 2 July 2026 and asked about accommodations, the hospi let us know that the Ruins Foundation is hosting an astronomy event tonight. She made it clear that the event was going to be both "loud and late". We accepted her warning and left for Castrojereiz.

Stay in the ruins. You won’t regret it!

Host was very kind, let us use his shower, cold water shower only and needed to save water.
The ruins are absolutely incredible to witness. The host guided us to behind the ruins where we were able to camp in a field because harvest has already been

The place has no electricity, only cold water and you are asked to save water, but I loved it. The hospitalieras were really nice, the food good and I got a lot of rest.

I was well and truly open on 23 May 2025 and the experience of super cold shower, no electricity, plentiful wine and paella and wonderful warm blanket in the small dorm . Angela is an angel. Best donativo so far for me.

Walked past there today before lunch and everything was locked up with nobody in site.

Today on May 9, 2025 I was waiting for the albergue to open, from 13:40 to 14:40, but unfortunately nobody came. An old local man said the albergue may not work because of the weather, since it was raining. Nobody answered an email with a question if the albergue would be open or not. Feel disappointed since I deliberately woke up earlier in Burgos to reach this particular place.

I am staying here (18.09.2024)-it’s open, magical (and no one is wearing helmets!) (reference to an earlier comment)
15. August 2024 - 19:40
Stay here if you get the chance. Joseph the volunteer on site was so accommodating and even let us in early due to the heat. The pilgrim meal was lovely. Check in is at 2.30 pm so be aware if you arrive too early. Take coins for the vending machine to get any drinks. No power or hot water was available

What an awesome spot. Definitely stay here if you can!
1. June 2024 - 8:27
Definitely open! I stayed here last night. Incredible, absolutely worth the extra 5kms. Of the 12 beds, there were 6 of us. I am a slow walker and didn’t arrive until just after 3pm and I was still only 4th of 6 :) two course meal, breakfast, incredible site, gracious hosts. A highlight of my Camino! There is no way to contact the hosts (even email, no reply) so no reservations.

My parents had recommended this place from their stay on the Camino, so I was so excited to see it is open!
5. May 2024 - 4:09
I was very sad when they announced that both the albergue and the ruin will be closed from May 1 2024, due to lack of funding and safety reasons.
I see in the news that people have to wear protective helmets to walk underneath the arches.
This has been one of my favourite spot on Camino. I hope they will find a solution very soon.

Sleeping in ruins is undoubtedly a unique experience...
There is one room with 12 beds.
No hot water and very little cold water... no electricity, no WiFi. Cooking all together.
But! A very quiet and spiritual place.
All for donations.

A really great night. Beautiful, peaceful setting, great hospitality, shared meal, comfortable beds. This will be a highlight of your camino.
18. October 2022 - 17:26
I was there at 16/17 october. It was the last night of the season, by now it's closed.
17. October 2022 - 18:11
I left with a very strange feeling from here. It's a donativo, but the owner strongly incites you to give at least 15€. That's a lot for just a bed, a very simple meal and a small breakfast. I am fine with no electricity but not with no water in the shower at all (read, not even cold water). And I am not fine with asking for that amount of money for a subpar experience.
13. October 2022 - 11:12
And will probably stay so until the end of the month. Don't count on a lot of cold water though because of the drought.
3. October 2022 - 16:48
Several of the pilgrims staying here today thought the albergue was closed but it's very much open. No hot water, no electricity and no WiFi but the atmosphere more than makes up for all that.
