Scenic view of Hontanas on the Camino de Invierno

Camino de Invierno App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Hontanas takes its name from the fontanas (natural springs) that dot the area. The springs still pour day and night, feeding fountains around the village. In summer, the local pool does most of the refreshing.

The village appears suddenly — sunk into a small fold in the meseta, it's invisible until you're nearly there. It's a welcome sight after the long, exposed walk from Hornillos. Several albergues, a couple of bars, and a small shop provide services. The atmosphere is generally friendly and unhurried.

Fiesta:

San Roque is celebrated on August 16.

No shop when we were here.

Only 2 albergues were open. Albergue El Puntido was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our double room with shared bath. Also had the pilgrims meal and was happy to have choices for all 3 courses.

Stop to meditate in the church

This church has a lovely, very inclusive area for contemplation. Worth a moment of quiet! (And sello!)

Public pool

Had a nice stay in Hontanas. The public pool is a budget friendly alternative to the spa, just 2€ for pilgrims!

Fuente Sidres DELICIOUS breakfast

Stopped here for breakfast on the way to Hontanas - they open at 9am. Lovely place. Beautiful setting and delicious food. Probably the best breakfast I’ve had on the Camino. Highly recommend.

Hostal Fuentestrella

I stayed here on April 14, 2025. It was a perfect location in this great village. The room was clean with linens and towels. David checked us in and was very cordial and helpful. We had a nice breakfast downstairs. I highly recommend this place and a stay in the town. In the summer there is a community pool.

Proper Hydrotherapy Spa

We stumbled across the spa when getting the Kay for our accomodation. Decided to give it a go. It was magnificent!! Jets for weary feet, calves, thighs and shoulders. Many others but that is where I spent my time. Also a magnificent sauna and drench bucket for post sauna.

We paid $15 E for an hour which is plenty of time and the time keeper turned a blind eye anyway.

The management is super friendly and helpful, including coming early morning to open shop for a silly git (me) who left their phone in a locker!

The spa is certainly with a stop in Hontanas for achy feet and legs. Trust me, this is not a paid advertisement.

Ermita Santa Brigida is at the town’s entrance

There is a tiny hermitage/shrine dedicated to St Brigid of Sweden in a little park as you enter the town. There is a small bench inside and a statue of the saint— a great little space for some quiet contemplation. She is co-patron saint of Europe and the hermitage was established in Hontanas as a meeting place for pilgrims. She made her own pilgrimage to Santiago in 1341.

No real market

There is no real market in this town. The albergue Juan de Yepes sells some sandwiches bag chips, and some basic fruit, some of which wasn't ripe.

Don’t miss the church !

I often skip visiting the church, but this one has a unique meditation/prayer space. Worth a visit.
