Services

O Porriño is the heart of Galicia's granite industry and has been for centuries. The town is functional rather than pretty, but the Palacio Municipal in the centre — designed by local architect Antonio Palacios using the same granite that makes the surrounding hills ring with quarry work — is worth a look.

Basic services. The camino leaves along the N550, crossing a roundabout on the north side of town. After passing under the highway, look right for a tunnel under the off-ramp that leads to Ameirolongo.

History:

Antonio Palacios, born here in 1874, became one of Spain's most prominent architects. His work includes the Palacio de Comunicaciones in Madrid (now the city hall) and numerous buildings across Galicia. The family name appears on buildings and monuments throughout O Porriño.

The Camino:

The camino leaves town along the N550. On the north end of town, you will cross a roundabout, keeping to your right. Soon the road passes under the highway, and the trail leaves the road immediately after. After going under the highway, look to your right for a tunnel that passes under the off-ramp. It will take you to Ameirolongo.

Nomadas World Food

Great place for a nice dinner at a good price

MUST take the alternate route to Porriño!

If you’re coming from Tui, there’s a lovely cafe called Garden after a forested walk of an hour or so. 30 minutes after that, you’ll face a choice of left or right, as the path splits. Do NOT go right - it’s a long, hot, unshaded walk through an industrial area. Miserable, as it’s the hottest part of the day. The only place to escape the heat and sun for over an hour is a water fountain provided by one of the manufacturers as well as a ‘outlet mall’, then a long walk alongn the highway into town.

Hostal Lauro

I had their small room for one with my own bathroom. Bit old fashioned but clean and only 30 euros. People were nice. Enjoyed the room and good location. October 2025

Good place to stop over

I wasn’t expecting much today based on comments about this town. But found it very pleasant. Whilst it might not have the same appeal as other places on Camino so far. It is still a good place to break up the journey. Good to experience more of an authentic town with fewer tourists, apart from the pilgrims!!

I disagree with the naysayers

We are staying here a day recuperating from injuries and have found everyone from the staff at Hotel Parque, the clerks at market, the used bookstore owner, the school children practicing their English in the plaza to be very helpful and friendly.

Maybe worse city on Camino :(

I was surprised but I agree with previous negative comments. We didn’t experienced any particular negative moments, but atmosphere in the city makes you feel uncomfortable somehow and you really willing to leave it as soon as possible.

O Porriño was great!!!

I’m not quite sure where the negative comments are coming from about it not being a welcoming or enjoyable place to stay, but I found my stay here to be awesome. There were great restaurants with very friendly people and a vibrant community. The center Square had entertainment as did the main pedestrian/shopping road. I wish every town was this lively.

Apartmentos San Juan is wonderful!!!

The place is incredible! The fridge was stocked with free beers, juice, water, and snacks. The bed was incredibly comfortable and spotlessly clean. The space was vast and well-appointed, and the security codes on the locks were a convenient touch. We had an amazing time there and highly recommend it. The staff also suggested Restaurante Castro, where we had some incredible meals. The octopus and fish were particularly delicious.

Not welcoming town… move onto the next town.

We were not welcomed here. The staff at the cafe would not speak to us. We ended up leaving and staying in Mos where we were welcomed

22. June 2024 - 17:45

Stay in Moss!

not a depressing city but stay in Moss if you can!

17. May 2024 - 15:58

Keep going if you can

O Porrino is a bit depressing, especially if it’s cold and rainy. If you can keep going past it, it gets much nicer. If you’re walking from Tui to O Porrino, definitely take the scenic route at the splitting of the ways (a few km out of Tui). It’s about 1.5km longer but is really worth it.

2. March 2024 - 13:37

Transfer to Vigo

If I want to stay overnight in Vigo instead of Porrino, what are the most convenient way of public transportation?

16. June 2023 - 17:04

Arrows and directions are wonky

As you leave O Porrino the edge of town has a walking bridge in construction but the markers do not give a good clear way to the detour.

Where to stay

Fonte dos aloques is the most beautiful place. the host is so nice and helpful. the beds fantastic and server towel and linen. would highly recommend this place, I wanted to stay one more night. only 12 euros

20. September 2022 - 10:19

Alojamientos Central

Alojamientos Central is a nice place to stay. Right above Restaurant Paso a Nival. Convenient for lunch, dinner and breakfast

Leaving Porriño

Leaving porriño at the roundabout there is a Camino sign that appears to point right up a dirt path. I followed the wisepilgrim map instead and went straight though the roundabout following painted arrows on the ground. Other pilgrims went up the dirt path, but it appeared to lead to a rec area instead of the Camino in my opinion.

24. March 2022 - 14:36

also: einfach ignorieren und geradeaus weiter gehen.

If you do stop in Porriño,

If you do stop in Porriño, pension cando is a very clean and central place. It’s basically a large apartment with a number of rooms that are rented out. It has a small shared kitchen with kettle, microwave , fridge, and a laundry area to rinse/wash clothes. The bedroom was roomy, clean and tidy. All fine for 2 pelegrinos.
