Camino de Invierno App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Zubiri is the first town of any real size after the Pyrenees crossing, sitting in the valley of the Arga river. It's a working town rather than a tourist one — a Magnesitas factory dominates the approach — but it has the services you need after the mountains.

Two restaurants serve pilgrim menus on opposite ends of town. A well-stocked shop near the church has everything to assemble your own meal. Several albergues operate here; on extremely busy days the municipal facilities sometimes set up overflow capacity.

The town makes a practical stopping point if you started in Roncesvalles and want a manageable first (or second) day. It's about 22 km from Roncesvalles, or 6 km short of Larrasoaña.

History:

The name Zubiri comes from the Basque for 'village of the bridge,' and the bridge in question is the medieval Puente de la Rabia over the Arga. Legend holds that animals led three times around the bridge's central pillar would be cured of rabies — a folk tradition that persisted well into the modern era.

Strangest bar hours

For some reason the bar closes at 6 pm, leaving your only dinner options to be, 1) the cafe (I mean who can't get enough of that breakfast food /s) 2) you booked a hostel that provides dinner, 3) you bought ingredients to cook your own, or 4) the bar at the community center, cafeteria polideportivo. Don't sleep on the community center bar; you'd think it was just a refreshment stand for the community center, but they actually have a legit pilgrim dinner.

Best Meal on the Camino and in Spain so Far

We booked a private room for two. Sara, who owns and operates the albergue, is a wonderful host and chef. She made special arrangements to provide a celiac meal and a vegan meal for my wife. The accommodations are clean, modern, and well taken care of. A real pleasure to stay.

Albergue Suseia

Booked Albergue Suseia based on the comments and it did not disappoint! Very clean rooms and bathrooms. Delightful garden in the back, perfect for enjoying a beer or glass of wine available in the dining room ( honour system of paying).
The Hospilatera Sara is super. Friendly and hospitable, her 4 course meal was filling and delicious: salad, hot soup or cold gazpacho, local dish of rice and tomato based sauce, homemade special yoghurt/pudding. Mid-meal appetizer of local sausage on baguette. Finished with homemade whiskey dark chocolate truffle. And enough (!) red wine for everyone to enjoy.
Highly recommend a stay here. Remember to confirm your reservation!!!

Albergue Segunda Etapa

The owner is super nice and helpful. Clean and convenient location. 1€ for laundry (clothes you wore today) and they hang them to dry.

Hearty breakfast at Bar Valentin

Our vreakfast consisted of a healthy Avocado and Tomato on toast which was very nice, and the Brioche with butter, marmalade and cream. Oh my word, this was huge - I'd need to do more than 20km to walk off that breakfast! 😳

Loved this place

The welcome medieval bridge was a delight. Soaked feet forever in the river as did everyone else. This was where my Camino family began to take shape as we ate our first tortillas with a cold beer. The Camino vibe had begun.

This place was clean, comfortable, and the owners daughter did our laundry for free! Great location too.

Bar Valentin

Thank you for the recommendation. Best breakfast we had so far on the Camino for a great price. The brioche bread with marmalade and cream was delicious and my daughter had the tostido which was also excellent. We also ordered a chorizo and cheese sandwich to go and shared it with leftovers.

Bar Valentin

Opened at 0700 for breakfast - great coffee and really generous serving sizes of toast with cheese and marmalade and also tortilla. We asked for two ham and cheese bocadillos for lunch wrapped to go as we had read on the blogs here that nothing would be open before hitting the Pamplona suburbs. My husband ordered two, one for each of us, and they were huge! We ended up just sharing one for lunch, perched on rocks along the Arga, and saved the second for the next day. Very friendly owner.

Sunday in March 2022

Only one restaurant open for dinner, near the far end of town, not great but totally fine.
