Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.
Get the appZariquiegui is the last village before the climb to the Alto del Perdon, about 11 km from Pamplona. A small cluster of stone houses along a single street, with a bar that opens seasonally and a fountain for water. Fill up here — there's nothing between Zariquiegui and Uterga on the far side of the pass.
The Iglesia de San Andres is the village's landmark, a 13th-century church in late Romanesque style with a recessed doorway and capitals decorated with plant motifs. The tympanum carries a chi-rho symbol. If you've seen the movie The Way, you may recognize the facade — it was used as a location in the film.
From here the climb gets more serious, gaining about 300 m over 3 km to the pass. It's not the hardest climb on the Frances by any measure, but on a hot day with a fresh pack from Pamplona it can feel like it.
Records from 1280 show the Navarrese Crown owned a monastery called San Salvador de Zariquiegui, which served pilgrims passing through. The current Iglesia de San Andres dates to the 13th century in its Romanesque core, though it was significantly modified in the 16th century when the walls were widened, the vaults rebuilt, and a sacristy added. What survives from the original building is the recessed Romanesque portal with its carved capitals and the chi-rho tympanum.
Beyond Zariquiegui the path climbs steadily on a rocky track through scrubland and low trees. The terrain is exposed — no shade, no water. The final approach to the Alto del Perdon is steep and can be windy. The wind turbines appear first, growing louder as you approach, then the famous pilgrim sculpture comes into view at the summit. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the climb from Zariquiegui.

Arriving into the town tired and wanting g to rest we were very happy to be accommodated. Even happier when we saw how lovely the Albergue was, filled with people we had met along the way.
We ategood food, we drank wine, we rested well and we left very happy.
We only hope the next Albergue is as nice :)

Very quiet little spot. Perfect place for me to stop as I didnt leave Pamplona until after 10am, and it was very hot! The host very kindly accommodated me being vegetarian, to the extent that I couldn't finish my food! Dinner accompanied by a half carafe of wine and water. Very generous.

This is a very nice and clean albergue with 36 beds split up into several rooms. There are three showers and two toilets. The owners are very nice and I understand their kitchen will open at 3: 30 PM. That is the only thing I did not like because I would like to make my own food, but we will see.
I feel that the review about the person getting food poisoning was unfair because they were walking in that extreme heat and could’ve picked up food poisoning anywhere along the route. Everything I have seen says this is a very clean and well kept place and I would not hesitate to stay here again.

I stayed there yesterday.
I had the Pilgrim Menu.at about 17.00 hrs....soup, chicken and fries and flan.
Nice soup, but the fries tasted odd, and I left most of them.
I think it was old cooking oil.
The chicken stew was ok, but it was just heated up.
Within an hour, I had nasty indigestion, which became more severe.
At approx 23.30 hrs, I rushed to the toilet where I vomited and had diarrhoea..
I had to go to the toilet five times during the night with diarrhoea.
I had zero sleep all night.
I spotted the manager in the cafe in the morning, but there were several people with him so I walked on without confronting him..
All in all, the worst albergue experience I have ever had, and I've walked multiple caminos.

One of the comments from 2024 said this place was closed permanently. I just made a reservation for late April. So, maybe they were closed for the season.

I tried to book here, but on arrival, the doors were locked. Went along to the Pilgrim office, and a lovely young man informed me it was permanently closed.

Wanted a short walk from Pamploma and glad I stayed here because I was tired when I arrived from the ascent. Stayed in and 8 person room. I would stay here again.

We arrived before 2pm so the small grocery (serves coffee) was open.
At the bar there were several sandwich options (tuna was good), coffee, more, I'm sure.
This is where you procure the Albergue. 15€
2 toilets and 3 showers were sufficient for the group. There are several rooms (4?) with 8 bunk beds in each. There were 2 empty beds in our room.
Dinner at hostel was good wholesome food. 16€ does feel pricey but includes 3 courses, wine and coffee or tea. I had salad, pork loin & fries, yogurt in a cup. Partner had veg/pea soup, chicken & fries, flan. All very tasty.

I enjoyed my night and really liked my dinner.
The staff were super friendly.
The downside is that everything is a bit run down and falling to pieces.

Clean albergue. Great meal. Wonderful staff.
30. April 2024 - 20:30
Juan was helpful. Had a washing machine and dryer. Fixed 3 course dinner a bit expensive for my budget, but you can just choose the courses you want and pay accordingly.

I have completely different experience here. The owner was very rude! There is just one small shop in his ownership and he had closed it at 3 pm a didn’t open again! The dinner was delicious, especially a very strong chicken broth, but the beds are old and in catastrophic condition. The handle almost stayed in my hand. Just two toilets for a lot of people, three shared showers and noisy building. Definitely not recommended!!!

I liked this rest stop. I needed to stay a second day to rest and the owners were very happy to let me. Dinners were good!!
