Scenic view of Vale de Figueira on the Camino Portugués

Camino Portugués App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino Portugués app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

A quiet village on the road to Azinhaga. The arrows between here and Golegã have historically been confused — partly because the local councils haven't agreed on the exact route, and partly because frequent flooding in the area makes the original way impassable at times. The arrows will get you to Golegã one way or another.

The Camino:

Keep on the main road until turning right onto Rua do Sobaral (two streets past Church). At the first three-way intersection (Y-shaped), keep left. At the next, keep right (with the forest on your right). The markings from here to Azinhaga are confused and quite possibly misleading; mostly to do with uncertainty at a municipal level as to exactly where the camino should be, and also because frequent flooding in the area make the original way difficult. The arrows will always get you to Golegã, but there is a possibility that they take you through Pombalhino first.

Carry mosquito repellent & sunscreen

On the way from Santarem to Vale de Figueira you walk through the vineyards, tomato fields, I even saw watermelon at some point. All these produce attract mosquitos and bigger flies. It was very annoying the whole way to fight with them. Repellent is advised.

There is also a lack of shade in this whole section. Better to start early in the morning and use sunscreen.

Path blocked by corn at 106.8km

Someone knocked the stone marker down, removed the arrow and shell tile from the stone marker, and planted rows of corn where the Camino is supposed to go according to this app and gronze. It looks like some pilgrims have walked through the rows of corn but as of July 4 2026, it was possible to walk to the left of it then catch the path back by going left at a large tree and taking the path to the paved road. The corn goes on forever - I would not recommend trying to walk through the fields. It’s a short detour

Not huge but vicious dog at 104km

There’s a small/medium size dog at 104.2 kilometers who will bark, chase, and bite you. I fended him off with my trekking pole on July 4th around noon and met a pilgrim the following day who had got bitten by the same dog. Take caution as you approach a large white home around a bend on a farm surrounded by fields of corn. Do not let this dogs size fool you!

1km off trail; solid option if you’re in the area

Although 1km off the trail and more expensive than a hostel, it’s certainly nicer and better featured. Nice and clean rooms. Comfortable beds. Nice shower. Friendly staff. Free W/D. 35€ per single. No food, but that available next door if open, or 900m back along the trail. Definitely recommended.

Accommodation

Casa de Laranjeiras was lovely. I stayed there 1 night in March 2025. Not exactly pilgrim budget but better than no places to stay. Had a lovely shower, washed my clothes, ate plenty of oranges from the tree in the garden … :)

Skip the first bar on your left.

They have nothing. Not even ice. 1 minute away is Val Doce. This place has everything. Very friendly.

Before Azinghaga, the camino

Before Azinghaga, the camino signs take you further towards the river and the national park/sanctuary. Not sure if a bridge is out or what, but a local driver strongly urged us to follow the signs when we tried to follow a different road indicated on this electronic map.
