Melide is the pulpo capital of the Camino. Although octopus has been on menus since O Cebreiro, it reaches its apotheosis here. The town's Thursday market meant that fresh seafood was shipped inland regularly, and the tradition stuck. Pulpo á feira — octopus boiled, sliced, dusted with paprika and coarse salt, drizzled with olive oil, and served on a wooden plate — is the dish. The Pulpería Ezequiel is the most famous purveyor, but several other pulperías compete vigorously.

Beyond the octopus, Melide is where the Camino Primitivo (the original route from Oviedo) joins the Francés. The town has a medieval core stretched along the road, shaped by centuries of pilgrim traffic. The Iglesia de San Pedro has Romanesque elements. The Iglesia de San Roque houses a small museum.

Multiple albergues and hotels, bars and restaurants, supermarket and pharmacy. The traffic through town can be dangerous, particularly on market days — follow the arrows carefully.

History:

Melide is an ancient settlement at a natural crossroads. Despite its strategic importance since Neolithic times, it was never walled — an unusual vulnerability for a town of this significance. In medieval times, nearly all industry was tied to the Camino.

The Camino:

The camino leaves Melide through the town center — watch for arrows, which can be hard to spot in the market-day crowds. Follow the main road to the first roundabout and continue straight. The terrain ahead is rolling, with forest and farmland alternating.

A Lua Do Comino - Pool!!!

Not on the app, but A Lua Do Comino is an amazing pension! It is on the left one block after entering Melide. For 50€ my wife and I got a private double in the main guest house. Very clean and comfortable in a beautiful house, with manicured lawn in back with longe chairs for relaxing. And the best part was a swimming pool with crystal clear water! The pool was not heated, but the chilly water felt amazing on tired muscles and aching joints. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They will do your laundry for 6€. No food offerings, but only 5 minutes to town center and lots of restaurants.

A Garnacha vs Ezequiel debate

Most pilgrims will struggle to choose one; I have gone to both and have drawn the following conclusions:

A GARNACHA
Pros: generous serving, good bread, traditional space
Cons: a bit watery, less condimented

EZEQUIEL
Pros: well condimented, modern and clean place
Cons: serving felt a bit small, bread not as nice as A Garnacha

I liked Ezequiel better due to the flavor of the octopus.

Oh yes, do yourself a favor and get an ice cream at Bornoniño right after... it's delicious and they make it themselves.

Pulpería Ezequiel was great

Pulpa had a great texture, quite soft . Excellent taste: olive oil, salt & paprika. Loved the relaxed atmosphere, long tables for group seating. The Galicia Broth was so tasty! A must try for the brave!!

Pulperia A Garnacha

The Pulpo Octopus was cold and slymey. Staff were not too friendly, although the bar man was great. I'm a bit disappointed 😞

Pension San Anton

Totally agree that this was a great stop! We were surprised by the pool, and the cold water felt fabulous after a warm day. Food was ok, but couldn’t beat ordering it and a drink by the pool.

Bocados for early meal

This place was an oasis on a Sunday evening.
We could not find a place serving food at 6 pm. Many places were packed with locals watching the soccer match and then closing when the game was over.
This spot is family run and had vegetarian pizza and arepas. Also plenty of options for Carnivors.
Best spot for early meal for
Pilgrims.

Pulpo and good hostel

Pulperia a garacha was nice ( good food , great prices , efficient staff ) Pension San Anton is great . The leather shop ( laya) in front of the cathedral did not want to let the machine charge us in Cad, a bit of a rip off, the staff is pushy. .

Urban Pension... Perfecto!

We found an amazing Pension in Melide. The facilities are beyond my expectations. We walked in with sore achy swollen feet and immediately were taken care of. The entire place is modern, spotless, and most importantly, the beds are super comfy. Our bedding included fluffy comforter and crisp sheets. The bath includes bath gel, shampoo and conditioner. The lounge area is a zen retreat. Our breakfast choices included freshly scrambled eggs and crisp bacon, granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, choice of teas, fresh orange juice, local ham and cheeses and more. I felt as if I was at a restaurant. There are laundry facilities on site including dryer. Rooms are large enough to relax without feeling cramped. The owner went out of her way to make us feel at home. She drove us to the medical clinic and back! Later she brought us a basin with Epsom salts to soothe our feet. In the evening she again drove us to a restaurant . She said we needed to rest our feet to continue our journey tomorrow. This place was so perfect we stayed an extra day resting watching Netflix. I don't why this Pension is not booked solid every day. Do your self a favor and stay here!

Casa de Ponte de Penas

Wow! What a treat. Walk through the crowded downtown area and there is a beautiful place with a sparkling pool in the country. It’s just a short distance off the Camino, maybe 200m.

New pension Praza das Coles

Right in the centre is a new pension with only 4 rooms. It’s beautiful, clean en very quiet. Costs about 56 euros. Would recommend it!
