Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

San Vicente de la Barquera is one of the most photogenic towns on the Norte — a medieval port on a headland between two estuaries, with the Picos de Europa often visible as a backdrop. The approach across the long bridge, with the old town rising above the marshes, is one of the better arrivals on the entire route.
The old quarter climbs a hillside to the Iglesia de Santa María de los Ángeles, a 13th-century Gothic church containing the tomb of Antonio del Corro — the writer and inquisitor is depicted reclining and reading a book, a posture that has charmed visitors for centuries. Next to the church stands the twin-towered Castillo de San Vicente, whose museum is worth less than the views from its ramparts. Old city walls and a Pilgrim Gate surround the old town.
On the far side of town, across the second bridge, the Santuario de la Barquera is set in gardens that make for a peaceful detour.
Note: this is where the Camino del Norte meets the Camino Lebaniego, which heads south into the Picos de Europa to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana. You'll start seeing red cross waymarks for the Lebaniego — don't follow them unless that's your plan.
The camino bypasses the old town by going straight through the roundabout at the bridge. To see the town, turn right at the roundabout and retrace your steps to continue.
San Vicente Mártir is celebrated on the 22nd of January with a farming fair. El Carmen is celebrated on the 16th of July, it is the place to be if sardines are your thing. The biggest celebration, that of La Folía, is held the second Sunday following Easter Sunday.
After crossing the estuary into San Vicente, the camino proceeds directly through the roundabout at the end of the bridge, and in so doing it doesn’t really go into town. To get to any of the services and transportation, turn right at the roundabout and then retrace your steps to leave San Vicente. It climbs slightly and crosses over the A-8 into Acebosa.

Don’t stay here. Ultra basic hotel right by beach. Poor plumbing. A bed, flimsy desk, chair and one light by the bed. I thought the bed’s gritty feel was that the sheets were old but half way through the night I realized that the bed was covered with SAND as I could pick it up and roll it in my fingers. Don’t stay here.

Highly recommend taking the 'old route' out of Comillas, which hugs the coastline to San Vincente and boasts fantastic views. A few KMs out of Comillas, after a bend in the road, you will be prompted by the new signage to cross the road and continue a path up a hill. Ignore this, follow the main road for about 500m, then go right. For the final 2km you can also walk along the beach. There is still some extant signage for the Camino, from when this was the designated route. I also recommend using the OSM overlay.

If you are struggling to find any accomodation in San Vicente during the summer months (as we did) - Surf House Gerra is a wonderful option - not far off the Camino (actually just off the original Camino that used to go right by it). Really clean hostel run by a very welcoming couple with a friendly dog. Bunk beds are very comfortable and in a spacious and airy room, lots of showers. Has a bar and restaurant that is very reasonably priced. 25euro per night. Highly recommend

Albergue el Galeon does NOT exist any longer. It has been replaced by a Nomada Hostel and with the high demand for beds, they prefer reservations. We arrived as soon as it opened and were lucky to find beds. We were operating on outdated information. The receptionist stated that over the last 10 days she has had to turn peregrinos away. I would recommend the hostel but make sure you book ahead.

Instead of following the road you can go towards San Vicrbte through the beach and the camping. Saves you cling 2 hills and it's an excellent break for your feet. From playa Gerra to Playa el tostadero.

der Weg führt jetzt durch den Wald, in der Näher der Eisenbahn. Sehr angenehm zum Gehen, weil durchgängig Schotterstraße. Trifft bei Serdio wieder auf die bekannte Route. Der neue Camino ist markiert!

4 of us stayed at el Corro. Located in the old town. Rooms are tiny and bathrooms even tinier. Still my room was comfortable enough. It’s just too expensive at 45 euro for a double given what is provided
