Camino del Norte App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Cornellana sits at the confluence of the Rio Narcea and the Rio Nonaya, a suitably strategic position for a monastery. The Monasterio de San Salvador has been the centerpiece of the town for nearly a thousand years, and the municipal albergue is now housed within it. The church's Romanesque portal, with its carved capitals and archivolts, is worth a careful look before heading inside.

The town itself is small and quiet, essentially the monastery and the services that cluster around it. If you're arriving in the afternoon, the riverside setting is pleasant for an evening stroll.

Fiesta:

San Juan is celebrated on the 24th of June, and Nuestra Señora on the 15th of August.

History:

A monastery has stood here since the early 11th century, founded by Infanta Cristina, daughter of King Bermudo II. In its early centuries it operated as a Cluniac house -- the French monastic reform movement that reshaped religious life across medieval Europe -- and became one of the most important monasteries in Asturias. It was a key stopping point for pilgrims on the Primitivo. The community is now considerably smaller and follows the Benedictine rule.

The Camino:

The camino leaves town from the road behind the monastery. Arrows are weakly painted here. Simply follow the road to the left of the monastery, and turn right at the first junction to follow the property line behind the monastery and uphill.

Great experience!

Loved the staff, courtyard was really nice, kitchen had everything we needed. It’s located close to a supermarket. They have washer/dryer donativo type payment.

Simple and easy

Gloria is very kind and helpful. The room and bed is clean. You don’t get sheets but if you ask for a blanket they will give one. Eater is hot, and laundry is avail but you can wash by hand and hang as well. Nice stay for me but it is still a 1000 yr old monistary . I recommend.

Albergue Monasterio de San Salvador

This place rocks. It's clean, has awesome showers, you can hand wash and hang dry your laundry for free, or machine wash and dry for a donation, the cocina is super cool, the dorms are clean, and the bed was comfy. To top it off, when we got there, we found out a peregrino from the night before had left beers in the fridge, so we snatched them up and siesta time turned into fiesta time.

Distance information may not be correct

Both La Rodriga and Cornellana are shown as 270.3 km from Santiago in the app, but are about 1km apart. I
think Cornellana should be lower.

Super water source in Cornellada

If you keep going along the mainstreet approx. 150 m instead of following the Camino in Corellano, you will find an excellent fountain to fill your water bottle.

Albergue is absolutely amazing.

Such kind people, and such a beautiful church, there is a kitchen you can cook in and the local store will have food you can buy for it. Nice courtyard inside with lots of flowers a place to do your washing and rest your legs. Absolutely amazing. We were fortunate to have a little tour of the church after hours by one of the caretakers who shared its history. Such a treat.

Cross the road if you stop at the bars

If you decide to stop for lunch or a rest at the bars in Cornellana. Be aware that the shell and yellow arrows pointing to the monastery and the Camino are on the other side of the road embedded in the side of a building. It’s very easy to miss the side street that leads to the monastery (and another steep asphalt climb)
