Camino del Norte App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

The ruins of the Hospital de Fonfaraon are scattered foundations on the mountainside -- stones reclaimed by grass and heather. Medieval pilgrim hospitals along the Primitivo were built at exposed mountain passes precisely because the terrain was deadly in bad weather. They provided the only shelter between valleys, and their strategic placement saved countless lives over the centuries.

Mid-August: The « weather-works »

We had a wild crossing of Los Hospitales which started beautiful, sunny and hot that became a series of four massive thunderstorms, two of which included hailstones of about 15 mm (big enough to hurt if unprotected) and several bursts of rain. The clouds moved quickly and we could often hear / see them coming, just in time to race to the nearest spot to safely hunker down. We had gear and were equipped to shelter in place, one time being under the remaining standing roofed structure at Fonfaraón. Be aware that the grazing animals roam freely, including inside the little stone building (ie. would not advise setting up camp inside).

Hospitales is amazing!

On very windy day make sure you have a windbreaker - it can get cold. Amazing views and animals are roaming free. Best day for me on Camino!

Not a bad weather route

We chose this route today and while it was mystical and beautiful in its own way; it was also really cold and windy up top, lots of rain and mud and generally pretty hard hiking conditions. No views due to all the mist. For moments I wished I had gloves and a hat it was so cold. Important to have good rain gear.
