Scenic view of La Arena on the Camino del Norte

Camino del Norte App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

La Arena has a long boardwalk and a broad beach — the second-largest in Bizkaia, stretching nearly a kilometer between the municipalities of Muskiz and Zierbena. Bars and shops cluster at the eastern end of the boardwalk. The camino follows the boardwalk to a footbridge over the estuary and into Pobeña. A good place for a final rest before the coastal walking resumes.

Notice:

Just prior to arriving in La Arena, you may notice old arrows directing you to your left. They occur shortly before passing under a bridge and should be ignored. Continue straight into La Arena.

The Camino:

The camino follows the boardwalk in La Arena, where it eventually joins a new foot bridge over the small estuary and into Pobeña. After crossing the bridge you have the option of going across the parking lot to the town, where you will find the albergue and several restaurants.

Path is closed

Unfortunately the path along the coast is actually closed now. There is a fence that is really tough to circumvent. Up until the fence it is really beautiful though.

There is a shortcut through one of the fields, but if you take that make sure to take the left portal to leave the field, since the right one is not doing so well.

Path up stairs is really closed

A couple of Spanish women walking back from the path told us it’s no longer possible even if you wanted to- there’s a real wall blocking it now a km down

Closed path up the stairs is good

Just after you have crossed the bridge after the beach in La Arena you will get to a car park. Here the app shiw you to turn right. It is up sone stairs.
There is a sign saying the path is closed. I took it anyway and it was really brautiful. There was no rocks on the path and everything was fine. There was also other people. Very nice.

Closed path is still very safe!

If you follow the instructions to take the right turn at the car park you will find the route is shut
Having viewed a comment from another pilgrim I took the risk and squeezed between the barrier.
Totally agree, the route remains very safe. The is one rockfall which is very passable and should not be any cause for concern.
The route is beautiful.
