Scenic view of Moratinos on the Camino de Invierno

Camino de Invierno App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Moratinos has been experiencing a slow renaissance, with a few buildings rehabilitated and a growing community of international residents drawn by the quiet and the cheap property. The hillside behind the village is honeycombed with bodegas — underground wine cellars dug into the earth like hobbit holes, built to store large barrels in the cool darkness.

A bar and a casa rural provide basic services. The atmosphere is unhurried even by meseta standards.

Albergue de Peregrinos Hospital San Bruno

This place is a complete gem!!! I don’t know how I was the only person to stay here tonight. But wow! They have a place to soak your feet in the backyard and they had fresh plums from their tree out for all today. The hospitalers are absolutely incredible. 15€ for 3 course pilgrim dinner that was fantastic. Great bunks and really nice solo room. Highly recommend staying here.

Walk through this town!

Miguel, the Improbable Guru, sits at a table with souvenirs and gives wax stamps by donation. He was a happy personable guy who made my day. He lives off pilgrim donations and gives beautiful stamps. -Mandi, Australia

First place you come to….

Hostal Maritinos. Even if you’re staying there, have one of their salads for lunch. Unbelievable, and huge. Seriously, don’t miss out.

Resturante El Castillo was great!

Great bar\restaurant they will serve you raciones past 12h. food is awesome, beer is strong. The locals will fill up the bar around 13h and are quite lively and lovely.

Breakfast cafe!

Great and lovely breakfast cafe just as you enter town! Cheap and big tostadas (recommend the tostada with omelette). Very clean and pretty bathrooms!

Don’t go to El Castillo!

I wouldn't eat here!
The waitress (daughter?) is impolite, rude, indifferent and absolutely not customer friendly or helpful!
She treats you as a (even Spanish-speaking) tourist like dirt. Doesn't understand that she can earn her living (also) thanks to the tourists. Owner not much better….

Skip the first restaurant and go to Bodega el Castillo

Bodega el Castillo is built into the side of the "hobbit" hill! It's amazingly good fun and a sangria with a free morsel of salami is only €1.50! Didn't eat here but I'd wager it's better than the salad I had at Hostal Moratinos.

Bodega El Castillo - bar/restaurant under the « Hobbit » hill

7th May 2023

Don’t stop at the first bar as you come to the village - go through and look for the hobbit house where you will find a fantastic bar / restaurant under the hill. The owner is an absolute delight. They have tapas, sandwiches (3.50-4euros) hot food, a fixed menu or a La carte. Open from 8.30am including on Sundays (closed Monday), they do breakfast. It’s a little tucked away but well worth following the signs to go around the corner.

Lovely respite and brilliant foot pool

Walk in, and before you check in you are asked to sit down and given water! Nothing is rushed, but not slow either. The Italian couple who run the place are lovely and helpful. Join the dinner, it is a step up from traditional pilgrims menus, Italian pasta as a first course! The foot pool I. The garden is fantastic and makes one question why they aren’t a standard Albergue feature. Stop here and enjoy!

Bodega El Castillo CATS!!!

Had a coffee and tortilla here. I was surrounded by feral cats. I counted at least 12, but I’m sure there were more. Totally Bizzare. (Nov. 2021)

San bruno is perfect oasis

I went to San Bruno, expecting the usual albuerge and recieved so much more than expected. It's a home and everyone feels like family. I ended up loving it so much I took my first rest day here and don't regret it for a moment. The grass is perfect, the fountain is amazing for weary feet, and the cooking left absolutely nothing to be desired, it was amazing. But more than anything was the genuine kindness from everyone there. It's more than worth a stop

Absolutely wonderful albergue

Absolutely wonderful albergue - Bruno and Juliana are so sweet. €10 for a bed in a modern dorm with single beds - only one bunk. €10 for dinner and €4 for breakfast. They offer massages of different types and they’re great. One of my favourite stays of the Camino so far. Tash - UK
