Scenic view of Agés on the Camino de Invierno

Camino de Invierno App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Agés is a pleasant small village with a quirky mix of albergues and several restaurants that serve meals throughout the day. It's a practical stopping point if San Juan de Ortega was full or if you want to break the distance to Burgos into manageable pieces.

The village has a quiet, lived-in feel that the smaller hamlets along this stretch lack.

The Camino:

Just outside Agés on the left, likely obscured by tall grass, sits a small single-span bridge over the Río Vena — one of San Juan de Ortega's lesser-known engineering works. It takes only one arch to cross the diminutive river.

El Alquimista is outstanding

I can only concur with the other contributors. A delicious balance and blend of flavours - homemade cooking that outshines any of the meals we had at our previous four star hotels.

Cafes/bars opening times

I came through here as 9:30am on a thursday morning and no cafe/bar seems to be open. I was told by a local that they open as 11 am. I hope this information is useful if anyone is planning on stopping here for food/breakfast.

DELICIOUS food!

Just had dinner at El Alquimista and WOW— truly some of the best food I’ve ever eaten! Served by a kind and personable couple who make it all themselves. What a treat! Around 16,5 for a pilgrim meal— soup, meat + tortilla, and a dessert with wine, and all generous portions too! Could not recommend this place enough!

El Alquinista Bar, Agés.

The bar was clean and well decorated, coffee ok. The owners were unpleasant and difficult to work with.

It's true about the burgers...

...at La Rústica - they are excellent.

Municipal Albergue

Don't stay here if you can help it. We were all charged full price and not told that there was no hot water. People complained, but the hosts didn't seem interested.

Albergue Issues, But Great Restaurant

I stayed at the he Albergue La Taberna ( Another sign says Municipal) and there was minimal hot water. Everybody complained about it. Also in the room I stayed in they had four fluorescent tube in a loft area that were supposed to stay on for emergencies. But the room was way too bright and eventually we asked that they turned them off which they did by circuit breaker. In the morning we turned those back on but out of 15 pilgrims no one could figure out how to turn on the regular lights.

However, I found the Albergue clean and they did take my reservation, which is why stayed there. Previously I stayed in Albergue Fagus which is nicer.

The Pajar Albergue has a for sale sign on it and was not open. It’s website says May 2024 opening.

But the Alquimista restaurant is still there and the food is wonderful! That’s where you’re going for dinner! And Ages has a very nice vibe.- March 2024.

No more burgers…

while The Alquimista is open, and has tasty food, the owner aas clear that he doesnt make fast-food… so those with burger dreams per the earlier comments, like me…will have your dreams dashed.

Proposal of marriage

I hope whoever wanted to propose to his next wife at El Rústica isn’t in a hurry… they’ve torn it down for renovations your review made us hunt it down I WANT THAT BURGER!!!

La Rústica

The food was a true culinary delight. Everything is fresh and the flavors are incredible. The Angel crying on your tongue is not an exaggeration. The couple that run it are amazing and the place is the perfect ambiance. I will propose to my next wife over a Rustica Burger and glass of wine from Rioja.

La Rústica Caravan Bar

This place was recommended to us and thank God! I am 58 years old and have lapped this planet over a hundred times. I can say, unequivocally, that this is, and will probably always be, the best Burger I have ever tasted. It is the food equivalent of an Angel crying on your tongue.
