Services

A hamlet with the remains of a castro (pre-Roman hillfort) nearby. No services.

History:

Shortly beyond the village, a mere 50m off the camino to your left, are the remains of the Iron Age castro that gives the town its name. It is seldom visited (there are no signs) but is worth an exploration. It can be found before the point where you meet the main road.

Casa Perdigueira Pension was really nice

Albergue Ortiz was closed when we came through so we stayed at Casa Perdigueira. Really good experience. Everything was clean and well appointed. There's no kitchen, but there's a fridge and microwave, and a bar down the street. Spacious room, too.

Albergue - best coffee ever

Fantastic coffee and virtually nobody there! Unlike previous cafe with 16 deep pilgrims

Finding the Iron Age Castro

As of posting, it seems like things have been rearranged to make it easier to find the castro. The Camino marker and a sign for the castro itself will both point you up a steep hill past a cement building. At the top of the hill, on the left, should be a sign with some info about the castro and a dirt path breaking off from the Camino. Just follow that path to find the ruins. After you’ve (respectfully) visited, you can keep following the path, which will dump you back out onto the Camino a short distance from where you left it.

Bar O Castro is a Delicious Option in Castromaior

We were happy to find this place open until 3 pm and again at 6 pm. Nice thin crust pizza, very fresh salad mixta, and good wine selection. Very friendly service. A nice option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We were grateful for it being nearby.

There is dinner!

There’s a bar (O Castro) in town that has pizza and some burgers in addition to tapas. It was open at 6pm. I’m not sure if it was open earlier in the afternoon but signage in the restaurant indicated they were open for breakfast at 7am.

No dinner options in Castromaior

A friend has told me last night that there was nothing available in terms of food at all. They walked back to Gonzar before the options there closed.

Castro is past the cement building

To find the Castro, keep going up the hill past the new-looking cement building. As of October 2021, the building was incomplete and there was nothing to see around it. Pilgrims milled around it thinking it was the Castro- it is not. Keep going up the hill off the Camino just a bit farther.
