Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino de Invierno app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Orisson is a popular stopping point for pilgrims splitting the mountain crossing into two days. The Refuge Orisson is a purpose-built gîte with bunks, a restaurant, and a terrace with sweeping views back toward Saint Jean and the French Basque Country. Dinner is communal and lively — it's where many pilgrim friendships begin.

Booking is essential, especially from April to October. The refuge fills up weeks in advance in peak season. If you can't get a bed here, your options are to push on to Roncesvalles (another 19 km with 800 m more of climbing) or to go back down to Honto or Saint Jean.

A small shop sells basic supplies and cold drinks. There's no other commercial service between here and Roncesvalles.

Notice:

If you arrive here late in the day, stop and ask about conditions ahead. Don't push on into deteriorating weather. Make sure someone at the refuge knows your plan if you continue — in bad conditions, people do get lost on the mountain above. Mobile phone reception is unreliable beyond this point.

Amazing as ever

Second time I have stayed here and it did not disappoint. Amazing views and evening.

Great breakfast stop!

We left SJPDP at about 5:30, so hit Orisson at 7:40 or so. Technically it doesn’t open until 8 for breakfast, but they unlocked the toilet and started serving around 7:50. Prices are great and food is good. There won’t be anything else until roncesvalles, except for the van at 15k selling snacks and drinks. Probably not enough for lunch, though, so not a bad idea to get a takeaway sandwich at orisson and have that. We took the longer route down into roncesvalles—less of a scramble on Rocky, gravelly terrain when you’re tired.

Great stay halfway the climb

Great place to stay and to break your climb over de Pyrenees. Communal diner and breakfast are great too, not to forget about the magnificent sunrise!

23. April 2026 - 16:23

Perfect location

Not the best albergue I'll ever stay in, but it was a welcome relief after the 8km up from SJPDP, no chance I could have done all the way to Roncesvalles in one day. The showers weren't great and you only get a few minutes, but it was fine. Beds are ok, nothing special. There is a communal dinner which was nice. Book in advance as it sells out months beforehand

Lovely Orisson

We had a lovely stay at Orisson on 13th April. The communal pilgrims’ dinner was really enjoyable, and it was great to meet and chat with fellow pilgrims. A special place to start the journey.

Lovely stay for the second time

Fabulous stay and communal dinner - if you arrive early then the terrace area is a great place to hang out.

Summer closure

On Mondays during the summer they do not open the refuge for stays. You can stop for food and drink but cannot stay.

Lunch stop

13th May 2025
What a beautiful view from the terrace! We stopped here for lunch, there is a very varied menu on offer- We had the mountain man plate it was nice enough except for the sausages😟
The staff were lovely. There is a nice Camino fountain to refill your water
The toilet had no tissue paper I don’t know if this is a general thing on the Camino but now you are forewarned- take your tissues in!

27. September 2024 - 14:49

Might be the last food stop!

Please don’t make the mistake I did and assume there would be another lunch stop along the way! This might be your only chance for food until Roncesvalles and you will need all the strength and calories you can get for today’s hike!

Our 3rd time at Orrison. Great way to meet pilgrims on day one. Wait staff were extremely friendly and attentive- especially when I upset my glass of beer all over our table. Our guy came, cleaned up my mess and refilled my glass for no charge. Dinner is filling and delicious. Will always recommend a stay here. Buen Camino 🇪🇸🥾🎒😎

Loved our stay!

We split the first stage into two by staying at Refuge Orisson. Great decision, since doing the first stage in one go is a really challenging way to start the Camino. We saw folks who had and they were very dispirited and practically ready to quit. Dorms are typical, with lots of bathrooms and showers for the group. Pilgrim’s supper was great and included everyone staying, since getting supper and breakfast with your stay is compulsory. Lots of food for everyone. We had a great time and everyone spoke about who they were and where they were from, and why they were walking the Camino. We really met our main Camino family that first night. Breakfast was good and we also got a packed lunch for the next day since there are virtually no services between there and Roncesvalles. Overall we enjoyed our first stay in an Albergue. Of course we didn’t sleep well, but that’s all part of the experience. I’d highly recommend staying here for your first night.

maybe continue on to Borda

This was the most amazing natural landscape that i’ve seen on the camino but i would stop for a coffee and not stay. staff was efficient but STRESSED. no soap at sink and only 3 outlets for 50 ppl (and they’re down in the bar). i was in a huge room and it had rained and there was one dryer that was sort of working for 50 ppl to share. oh well, it made the subsequent albergues seem great!! despite all that, the sunrise leaving orisson in the morning was out of this world

Packs a snack and be prepared

I made a reservation at Orrison and they cancelled the night before (not sure why). Borda was also booked. The food truck was not there. I packed snacks and made it all the way to Roncesvalles and it was a very long day. Everyone along the journey was great but I think it’s important to have a plan and a backup plan. Take care of your feet and pack a snack. Buen Camino.

Stayed 1/5/2024

At first it looked like chaos when we arrived wet and cold but it was far from that. We were met with a waitress telling people to take their wet weather gear off outside. She then organised the whole room with their lunch orders . The dinner was great! The company was great and they supplied old newspaper to dry out their wet shoes.

1st May 2024

Stayed at Orison on first night. So much excitement in the air. Walked up from SJPP in wind and rain. There was a place to hang your rain gear and newspaper to stuff your shoes. Staff were amazing. Great soup and bread for lunch and then pilgrims menu at night. Everyone had a chance to introduce themselves via using a spoon as a mic. It was a fun night. The outside deck was closed due to conditions.

Confirmation

Hello!! I have booked my first night here, and paid for it. I booked directly, did not use a service. I can’t find a confirmation or evidence of my booking g except for on my credit card statement. Should I be concerned? This is my very first time !

28. April 2024 - 20:22

Great start to my Camino

The dormitories were clean, well maintained and looked over a lovely valley. The meal was delicious and the time for introducing ourselves and our reason for walking the Camino was very meaningful.

7. October 2023 - 8:16

One of my best memories on the Camino

My daughter and I stayed here our first night. It was very clean and well organized. The views are first rate! The staff is busy and sometimes the pilgrims treat this place more like they are tourists. I read somewhere on a sign something like: “Tourists demand. Pilgrims find gratitude.” Connect with your gratitude. Make incredible friends you’ll see over and over along the way and Buen Camino!

Thinking about staying at Auberge Orisson?

If you are thinking of staying overnight at Auberge Orisson here are some helpful hints:
1. The staff is busy, exercise patience;
2. The staff may come across as rude, exercise empathy. You are on a journey. They are on the job;
3. Book way ahead. If you cannot make it all the way to Roncesvalles, make this stop the first place you book in your planning;
4. Take the sandwich option for the next day. The mountains are a great place for a picnic;
5. Ask them for your wi-fi code. They will not tell you unless you ask. However, wi-fi is not available if you’re just passing through;
6. If you have a private room, pay the €20 deposit for your key. You get it back, and you can feel secure about your belongings;
7. If you are traveling with another person and want to sit together for dinner, show up early. People line up. However, pilgrims are kind, they will probably move for you;
8. ONE 7-minute shower was enough time for TWO of us. Think about water and the environment - make it part of your Pilgrimage;
9. Orisson is NOT the only choice. You can stay at Auberge Borda, you can walk all the way to Roncesvalles, or you can taxi back to St. Jean and come back the next day; And finally,
10. After reading all this, make sure that this is really the place for you. Once you book, there is no refund. Just a date change if they have availability.
Buen Camino!
