Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino to Finisterre and Muxía app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Negreira is the first proper town since Santiago and the place to resupply. All services are available -- supermarkets, pharmacy, ATMs, restaurants. The Xunta albergue is on the far end of town, so pick up supplies before you get there if you don't want to walk back.

The Pazo do Coton, a 14th-century tower house near the center, is the most notable building. It now houses the town hall, but the medieval tower is original and gives the town a gravitas its size might not otherwise suggest.

If you're an early-morning walker, scout the route out of town the night before. The camino leaves near the municipal albergue on the west side and passes into dark forest quickly, not emerging until Zas.

History:

"Because I am not inscribed from Noya but from Negreira, where I was born. And from Negreira, which is up the river Tambre, they take you for the army." So says a soldier to his corporal in Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Hemingway lived for a short time in Santiago de Compostela in 1929, and the impression Galicia made on him was lasting. He referenced it in several novels -- here giving the birthplace to an unnamed character. Some have suggested he also named the protagonist of The Old Man and the Sea after the city, though this remains local lore rather than confirmed fact.

The Camino:

The camino leaves Negreira near the municipal albergue on the West side of town. If you stayed in that albergue, go back towards town a short distance and follow the signs to the church. If you are an early morning (in the dark) walker, do yourself a favor and scout the route the night before. It passes into the dark forest fairly quickly and does not emerge until just before Zas.

Albergue San José wow!

This one is great! Super spacious and very clean. The kitchen is well equipped and even the cups are in line. The garden is very large and has trees, grass and plases to dry your clothes. There’s a lot of recommendations written aboit Coton but San José has this big garden which is an extra “ plus” for me❤️

albergue Coton

Really an excellent place. The washing machines actually wash and the dryers actually dry. Every pilgrim has the right to a clean, free towel. There are plenty of bathrooms with toilets and showers all very clean and to top it off the hospitalera Tania🐱 is really a friendly and valuable presence. I would definitely go back.

Sunday Hours

Pleasantly surprised to find the shops open on Sunday - short hours, only until 2pm. But a great opportunity to restock.

There was a great open air market happening on the way out of town

Casa Barqueiro - Restaurant

One of the best meals on the camino - i had grilled said and rice and my partner had Grilled octopus. The place was full of locals so you know it's good - not cheap but also not too expensive.
If you want a nice meal instead of "menu del dia" I highly recommend going here. It's in the middle of the main street on the opposite side of the road to the camino. Mardi

Be sure to visit Panaderia Xallas

We arrived on a Saturday, the day before Galician Language Day and the supermarkets had closed early. The only place open, with a long line was Panaderia Xallas. We decided to get in the queue. We ended up buying 2 types of cheescake in manageable portions as everything seemed to be sold by weight, along with raisin bread and cornbread - it was all so delicious! Highly recommended!!

Dinner in Spain at 20:00 or later

A local told me most places (not all) close around 15:00-15:30 and don’t reopen until 20:00. Restaurante Pizzaria Milio opened at 19:30.

Albergue Coton

Awesome albergue, close to supermarket. Clean rooms, bath have toilets and showers and clean towels. Beds have pillows and blankets, and they gave me a paper sheet to cover the mattress.
Nice kitchen to cook anything.
Great washers and dryers
and clothes lines and clothes pins.
Super nice staff

Stock up on cash, essentials & veggies in Negreira!

We didn’t come across any other decent opportunities to get cash from an ATM, to buy our preferred healthy lunch ingredients (tomatoes/lettuce etc) or to purchase female essentials (hint, hint ladies!) until Finisterre. Wish I’d known to stock up in Negreira as I got caught short by O Logoso…

Alburgue Coton - best on Camino so far

What an incredible hostel - clean, friendly staff and atmosphere, and towels! Can’t say enough - wish every hostel was like this!

Municipal albergue Negreira - bed bugs

I woke up this morning with bed bugs crawling on me. They were on the bed, the wall, the floor - in the entire room, not just on one bed. Avoid this albergue until the problem is fixed; the bugs were hiding in the wall. August 25, 2024.

Albergue Cotón Wonderful

Great customer service, everything a pilgrim needs including a dryer. Wash and dry are 4€ each, which is reasonable. Raúl, the owner, is lovely. 100% recommended.

Bonita Negreira

Taxi Lola - Excellent service!

I left something in my hotel in Santiago and after walking all morning I realized I had to go back to Santiago. I called Taxi Lola and she was a savior! She spoke good English and got me there and back in no time. She is very professional and I’m so thankful I was referred to her! +34 686 31 6734

Bar / Food

Had a great salad @ Bar Porto. They have a full tapas menu as well and were open at 5pm when I was there.

Walk to end of town

Much prettier, more atmosphere, nice bars

29. May 2022 - 16:29

Restaurant

Walked around town looking for a place that served dinner early. Ate at Bar Oriel at 6:30. Simple, reasonable prices. The little pizza place on main road across from Information office also served early.
