Camino Inglés App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino Inglés app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Pontedeume is the first town on the Camino Inglés that truly feels like a destination. Founded in 1270 by Alfonso X, it sits where the Eume River meets the ría, and the medieval bridge that gives the town its name stretches across it. The old town is compact, cobblestoned, and easy to explore on tired feet.

All services here: bars, restaurants, shops, pharmacy, ATM. The municipal albergue sits down by the harbour — a good spot to rest and watch the water. Pontedeume has genuine character: narrow streets, good food, and a sense of history that isn't put on for tourists.

The Torreón de los Andrade — the last remnant of the once-powerful feudal family that controlled this region — is now an interpretation centre. Climb to the top for views across the estuary to Cabanas, the bridge, and the fish market below. The Iglesia de Santiago and the nearby Fragas do Eume (a pristine Atlantic forest along the river) are worth knowing about, though the forest is a detour off the Camino.

Fiesta:

Market day in Pontedeume — check locally for the weekly schedule.

History:

Pontedeume owes its existence to the bridge. Fernán Pérez de Andrade built the original stone bridge in the 14th century — 79 arches stretching some 850 metres across the Eume. The current bridge dates to the 1860s but follows the same crossing. The Andrade family ruled this stretch of coast for centuries, collecting tolls from everyone who crossed. Their tower still stands in town, and Fernán Pérez de Andrade's tomb lies in the Iglesia de San Francisco.

The Camino:

Before arriving in Miño, the Camino makes several twists and turns to navigate around the AP9 highway. The walking is hilly in places and the route can feel a bit industrial near the motorway, but you're rewarded when you reach the coast again. About 12 km to Miño.

Albergue Río

Great albergue - clean, close to the city center and comfortable. To eat at Pontedeume - Casa de La Abuela, the best burgers and pizzas 😍

Ponte baixo & refreshment stops

Our hostel (top of the hill out of town, beyond camino turn, but you can easily go right and right to rejoin the camino to avoid doubling back after the steep climb) coffee machine was broken, so we headed away from pontedeume desperate for a drink. Been told have to walk 10km to mino, but ponte baixo was a beautiful oasis as others have said.

We walked past mino, but at 15km there was a lovely cafe in a posh looking hotel right on the camino which has gorgeous cake and artisan ice cream. 3 drinks 6 euro. Good value for lovely place.

Ponte Baixo food and drink

Ponte Baixo food and drink. The cafe is at Ponte Baxio. It's run by Rocio who is a wonderful person and so kind to pilgrims. It is about 2.5 kms before Miṉo and is in a yard where the big Camino painting features on the wall of the cabinetry workshop. Rocio is a star of the Camino and her portrait features on a wall as you enter Miṉo. Beautiful little place and she is very welcoming. Her cafe was inside the big Worksop 4years ago but now it is a seperate building inside the gates. Lovely food and coffee. 👍

Ponte Baxoi is on the way to Miño

OK so I was misled by these comments appearing on the Pontedeume listing. The new cafe/bar is before Miño. It looks great - with a walking stick donating station - but the gate was closed when I went by around 2pm. Siesta maybe?

Ponte Baxoi

I don’t think I passed this cafe. Is it on the alternative route that isn’t shown in this app but does appear on the maps in Buen Camino? I really could’ve done with finding this place as I walked from Fene to Pontedeume without breakfast. I needed that café :)
