Scenic view of Ponte Ulla on the Camino Francés

Camino Francés App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino Francés app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Ponte Ulla marks the crossing of the Río Ulla and the boundary between the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña. It's also where the Camino de Invierno walkers, who joined at A Laxe, continue alongside you on the final approach to Santiago.

The town has practical value: a Día grocery store on the way out (stock up if you're heading to the albergue in Outeiro), and an excellent panadería right on the camino in the blocks after you cross the bridge. The Romanesque church in town is dedicated to Mary Magdalene and is worth a quick look.

The bridge itself is the town's reason for being. The old stone bridge over the Ulla has been a crossing point for centuries, and you can feel the weight of all that foot traffic as you walk across. The distinctive railway viaduct of Gundián, dating from the 1930s, is visible from town -- about 170 meters long, it was built as part of a rail line from Pico Sacro.

Notice:

The stretch of N-525 leaving Ponte Ulla can be dangerous. Keep an eye open for the two points where the camino leaves the road.

Fiesta:

The parish celebrates its patron saint festivities in the summer. Check locally for dates.

The Camino:

The camino follows briefly a section of the N-525 as it leaves Ponte Ulla. This section can be a bit dangerous, so keep an eye open for the two times it leaves the road. The first is to your left, so you'll need to cross. The second is to your right, which means crossing back. About 500 meters separate the two crossings. If these crossings sound unnecessarily dangerous, you're not alone.

After the second crossing, the camino returns to safer side roads as it climbs to Outeiro.

The nothing is open self serve stop

After you cross the bridge and come into town past all the closed businesses (it’s 12:20 on a Wednesday on march 25 2026) there is a welcome and respite from the cold with vending machines for warm and cold drinks and some home made goods. Very welcome today.

O Cruciero bar / cafe is great

As you come in to town on the right just before the gas station. Open from 7am until 1530 and from 20h00 for dinner. Excellent food at really reasonable prices. Friendly team. Highly recommend.

As above Keep right DO NOT CROSS THIS DANGEROUS ROAD

While there are still flashing warning signs for drivers suggesting that pilgrims are crossing the busy road as you leave ponte Ulla in fact the Camino mojons are all on the R and the wise pilgrim app is not up to date. Keep On the right and you will be fine
Also the cafe at O Cruceiro was open early afternoon on a Sunday as was a lovely panadería selling empanadas on the R just after you cross the bridge into town

No longer need to cross the road

I walked this stage in early 2023 and it seems they have rerouted the Camino so you no longer have to cross the highway. There's a new marker that takes you down slightly to a service road .... Just stay on the right, it's quite obvious.

I could still see an arrow on the other side of the road but if you follow the new markers it feels safe.

Happy walking!

Dont cross the highway

My advice is to not cross the highway. It’s very dangerous three Lane Highway 90 km/h with you blind turned on each end. My advice is to walk along the right side of the highway where there’s a concrete divider between you and the road. I stupid at the Camino makes you cross this highway walk a little bit and then cross it again when you can just walk alongside the road and get there and it’s much much safer.
