Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino Francés app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Grañón is the last village in La Rioja on the Camino Francés, and it has earned a reputation far beyond its size. The parish albergue in the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is one of the most distinctive experiences on the entire route. You sleep in the church itself — mattresses on the floor of the upper gallery, reached by a worn stone spiral staircase. Dinner and breakfast are communal and donation-based, prepared and cleaned up by everyone together. Prayer follows dinner. It's not for everyone, but those who stay here tend to remember it for years.
The church is worth visiting regardless. The 16th-century Baroque retablo is one of the best-preserved in the region, with rich gilding and detailed carving. Of the two monasteries that once served pilgrims in Grañón, only this altarpiece survives.
The village itself is small — fewer than 200 residents — with the solid stone architecture common to these Riojan border towns. A second albergue opened at Carrasquedo, about 1.5 km south in a forest setting, giving pilgrims a quieter option. A couple of bars, a small shop, and an ATM cover the basics. There's a pharmacy in town as well.
Beyond Grañón, the camino crosses into Castilla y León. You'll know — the landscape opens up and the architecture starts to shift.
The Fiesta de la Virgen de Carrasquedo falls on March 25, with Mass celebrated in the chapel and open-air dancing. On May 1, the Virgen de Carrasquedo is processed from the chapel to the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, where she stays through the summer months. San Juan Bautista is celebrated on June 24.
Grañón's origins are military. The first written reference dates to 885, when "the castle of Grañón was destroyed" — though it was promptly rebuilt. The castle on Mirabel hill formed part of a defensive line against Muslim forces trying to push into Asturian-Leonese territory, alongside nearby fortifications at Pazuengos, Cellórigo, and Bilibio.
From 1044 onward, Santo Domingo began promoting pilgrim traffic along this stretch of the Camino, and Grañón grew accordingly. In 1187 Alfonso VIII granted the town a charter of rights, establishing the legal framework for the settlement that grew up around the pilgrim route.
The town's strategic position on the La Rioja-Castilla border meant it changed hands more than once during the medieval disputes between Navarra and Castilla.
The walk from Grañón to Redecilla del Camino is about 4 km of gentle terrain. Roughly halfway, you cross the regional border from La Rioja into Castilla y León — province of Burgos. There's no grand marker, but the landscape begins to change. The villages ahead are smaller, quieter, and more typically Castilian.
From Redecilla the camino continues through a string of small agricultural villages — Castildelgado, Viloria de Rioja, Villamayor del Río — before reaching Belorado, approximately 18 km from Grañón. Services are scarce between Grañón and Belorado, though most villages have at least a bar.

In this parish hostel you find sharing, complicity, respect and the pleasure of preparing dinner together, eating, washing dishes and taking a moment to connect with each other. It's magical.

We found ourselves in Grañón for Sunday Mass. It took maybe 35 minutes because they said the Apostles' Creed, not the Nicene Creed, sang one refrain of Glory Hallelujah (yes, the Battle Hymn of the Republic) instead of the Gloria. I don't think there was a Penitential rite, either. There was almost no homily. The priest didn't dismiss the Mass, but left the church and some women made announcements. Yet another church on the Camino that felt more New Age than Catholic.

Such a gracious host. Beautiful big room and bathroom for two. I had booked for myself but invited a Camino friend to share. He didn't even charge me any extra. And it's a quiet oasis at the end of a long walk day.

Me and my father loved this stage of our camino. Even though the matrasses and facilities are basic, the hospitaleros (volunteers) provided a special atmosphere. A homely energy with a firestove, games to play and a ritual in the church where we, together with all the other plegrims, prayed and talked about our reasons for doing the camino.

Really cool experience with the cooking and setting everything up together. The best was the evening prayer, even though I think the people made it special.
Only issue in the morning the people from the grund floor wasn't able to leave, because the other door with the shoes was still locked 😄

On entry to the town there is a friendly food truck. Unfortunately the coffee is awful :/. First bad coffee in Spain, just a tiny cup of tepid milk!

Based on other reviews we googled Donde Christina and booked a room. Her house has rooms with private bathrooms, immaculately clean. There is a beautiful sitting area and she provided breakfast. She was such a welcoming lovely host. She gave us dinner recommendations and told us about the village. I would not hesitate to stay again.

Based solely on the comment below, we called Cristina after we arrived in Grañón. She is a legend! This is easily the nicest place we have stayed so far on camino. Clean, comfortable, modern, well appointed. Cristina even left us treats from the local bakery for breakfast. We felt blessed to have found this place.
Good burgers at La Concha, too.

Before and after the town the way marked on the map is not what the yellow arrows show. It’s well marked but just Don’t be surprised if you are off the map route

If you’re trying to catch the bus onwards, it doesn’t stop in town. It stops at the intersection of the highway just outside town. On the Autobuses Jimenez website this is shown as “Grañon (empalme)”. There’s a small bus shelter on the north side of the highway.
