Water Taxi from Caminha to A Guarda

Camino Portugués

Camino Portugués App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino Portugués app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Several companies now offer the crossing from Caminha to A Guarda, and the ride takes around 20 minutes. The schedule varies with the tide, so you'll need to check locally or call ahead -- your accommodation in Caminha will almost certainly have the timetable posted, along with a link to make a reservation. Bikes are accepted.

The crossing itself is pleasant, especially in the morning when the estuary is calm. You're moving from Portugal to Spain, so adjust your watch forward one hour when you land. If you're waking at the same time as the day before, expect it to be darker than usual.

There are a few boats that go, one of them is Pepeye the Sailor Man: (+351) 925 880 712.

Popeye !!!

Went to Taxi Mar - they said about an hour… > 1 hour later, was obvious would be at least another hour or more (only 5 people every half hour)

Walked down to Popeye … she not only put me on the next boat in 10 minutes, but told me I could go get a refund from Taxi Mar …

Saved me over an hour AND 6€ !!

Obrigado 🙏

Don’t use Xacobeo

I recommend Popeye - boats run every 8 minutes, even if you have a ticket to a next day - you still can jump on one of the boats. We bought a ticket at Xacobeo, but apparently they don’t have their own boats and Popeye run service for them.
Station is not at the cafe but a bit before on the river side, lovely lady is there to help you and guide you and she has a great stamp!!!

Skip Xacobeo Transfers

Did not have the most positive experience with Xacobeo Transfers to cross the channel. Their boat “broke” so they had to have another boat come get us after they dropped of their customers. This caused a 30 minute delay of departure which is not ideal as you lose an hour due to time change when entering Spain. I instead would recommend taking the water taxi down the road which was 2€ cheaper and we saw running on time.

Timings

Website says they operate till 7 pm. But they only run till 5/6 pm. Call and check beforehand to be sure

Alternative taxi

There is a an alternate route available to Bar Baracuda just before Caminha. It goes through lovely pine forest. Much to our surprise and delight, there is a water taxi operating adjacent to the bar.

The taxi crosses at the mouth of the river and the detour avoids Caminha, cutting off several
Kilometres of walking to a Guarda.

I don’t know how long/how often this company will run, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Xavobeo transfer

The taxi can simply be booked online at https://xacobeotransfer.com/en/home/ in several languages. It runs on time and is quite easy.

Caminha Ferry taxi boat

Taxi boat is not operating. Only Xacobeotransfer.com make sure you chose Caminha to AGuarda option if going north. €6

Crossing option

We booked xacobeo transfer online the night before. The collection point was marked on the quayside by a banner. It was a stormy day but the boat still ran. Skipper showed up on time and the crossing was smoothly done.

Note it was a long walk to a Guarda and it wasn’t well marked (we got lost for a while)

Long wait at Taxi Mar

Grab a water taxi earlier. Had to wait over an hour for our turn.

Water Taxi by Hotel deal Sol

There’s a small water taxi leaving from by the Hotel deal Sol in Esteiro as well, it’s great! Run by Paulo and Miguel and 6€ pp. They leave whenever they have people so I arrived with a group of about 9 people and we took two boats over. It was great because we also landed on the Litoral path by the coast but further around so it didn’t add a lot to the way.

Host helped me organize the taxi

I paid 4 euro each for a water taxi for 2 adults and 5 year old son was free of charge . Smooth and too fast . 3 mins max ride to the other side. Just know your feet will get wet arriving to the side of Spain

20. July 2022 - 14:29

Taxi Mar - 6€

Taxi Mar offices sit on the coast. A very straightforward journey over to Spain.

13. July 2022 - 13:21

Taxi Mar is available for 6 €

I was able to buy a ticket and get a ride across in a very short time.

Fisherman

The ferry isn’t running, but almost directly in front of where you would book the ferry is a little dock just to the right. There was a fisherman there waiting for Pilgrims who called us over, and took us by boat immediately for 7 euros :)
