There are two ways from Mindelo to Ávore, one along the waterfront and one inland. In recent years the waterfront option has become sand-swept, making it difficult for cyclists.

Board walk is out in several spots. One is a river lagoon crossing that is a bit challenging to circumvent requires climbing over dunes and walking through shallow river. Consider going through town if you don’t want to get your shoes or feet wet and sandy!

Stayed at this lovely guest house. Private room and bathroom. Host is lovely. Short walk to the Camino. Served breakfast. Very helpful with places to eat dinner and stop along the way. Highly recommend.

We loved Bombordo’s in Mindelo. Good, tasty food, beer and wine… and a morning americano. Friendly, good service and a spectacular coastal location. Highly recommended.

Boardwalk is still out, but there is a signed detour through sand/dirt tracks a bit further inland which is longer than the boardwalk

The boardwalk is now closed. They are adding sand barriers. You will need to switch to the other coastal route
11. June 2023 - 10:55
As of June 2023, approximately 1km of boardwalk is still out of service. Short sand walks are required.

The boardwalk from Gafa to Ávore is out about halfway in between. Additionally, sand dunes have consumed whole sections of the boardwalk, which is now 1.5m under the sand in some places. This makes it very difficult for anyone traveling with wheels, particularly strollers.
