Camino Portugués App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino Portugués app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

The Metro Line A (Linha de Matosinhos) terminates here and offers a convenient way to skip the least scenic stretch when leaving Porto. You can also reach Matosinhos directly from Porto Airport with a single transfer, handy if you're skipping Porto altogether.

Matosinhos is Porto's fishing port, and the streets near the harbor are lined with grilled-fish restaurants where sardines and sea bass cook over charcoal on the pavement. The Senhor de Matosinhos church, designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th century, anchors the town center. If you're passing through in June, the Festa do Senhor de Matosinhos fills the streets with processions and music.

The Camino:

The camino enters town along the beach-front, and turns inland when it reaches the harbor, making a zig zag path to the bridge over the Río Leça. At the end of the bridge you will turn left at the large roundabout, to follow the Rua Hintze Ribeiro back towards the waterfront.

Bridge now open!

We saw the alert and were emotionally prepared to have to take a shuttle over the bridge, but the pedestrian sidewalk seems to be open again!

D'El Rei B&B

Late check in which suited as we had a late flight into Porto to start the Camino. Great variety of food for breakfast. Very short walk to beach to join the camino path and get our first stamps in the tourist office on the seafront.

D'El Rei BnB

Extremely helpful staff who printed our luggage transfers for us. Extremely clean and, while small, was great for one night.

Sergio Crivelli Italian restaurant

Someone here recommended the Sergio Crivelli place. I was very excited to go there and try the pilgrim menu. However, I was disappointed to learn that they don't offer it on weekends :(( I was there on Saturday. I believe that the restaurant is nice and serves delicious food, but even the cheapest salad on the menu is 20€. I decided to have a drink and move on.

Caruma Surf Hostel

Had a lovely stay here - a nice starting point or end to a short first stage after Porto. Very open sharing living spaces, well equipped kitchen and very close to the beach and a Lidl. Beds in dormitory were comfortable and bathrooms were fine - quite spacious.

Tourist office stamp

You can get a stamp at the tourist office. Keep in mind it closes at 1pm on Sunday and it is not open on Monday.

Caruma Surf Hostel

Not far from the route or from the town centre (very short walk to Lidl), and really lovely and cosy! Quite quiet when I stayed. Filled with gorgeous art. Was offered a gorgeous wax stamp for my passport (unfortunately it flaked off during the next days walk, but still very appreciated!)

27€ for a 10 bed dorm. Highly recommend if you’re in matosinhos

Great little Italian restaurant with a pilgrim menu for €15

Sergio Crivelli

R. Brito Capelo, 705, 4450-076 Matosinhos, Portugal

He has a pilgrim menu for lunch. Appetizer, a glass of wine or something else to drink, a main course, dessert, and coffee. Very wonderful service…he gets the produce from his farm and makes his own pasta!

Wonderful market

Terrific local market.

2. February 2023 - 14:39

Market before the bridge

There is a freshly renovated local market on the left right before the bridge. Refreshing to get some fruit.
Also if you fallow the path after the tourism info center some kilometer later there is a tiny post office that gives a beautiful stamp.
