Vía de la Plata App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Vía de la Plata app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

The Castillo de El Real de la Jara overlooks the town from a hilltop to the east — climb up for the views and a fine sunset. The castle dates to the 13th century, built during the Reconquista to defend the shifting frontier between Christian and Moorish territory. It's empty inside but has been made safe for exploring.

The town itself is small, with a couple of bars and basic supplies. About 1 km south of town, a small creek marks the border between Andalucia and Extremadura.

The Camino:

About 1km after leaving El Real, the camino crosses a small creek which marks the entrance to the region of Extremadura. It continues to follow rural trails until El Culebrin and the adjacent 24h truck stop.

El Montero

We were here on Sunday, and had the best chicken sandwiches. Fair prices and decent service. Highly recommend

Avoid El Montero

Avoid El Montero "electro harinera" - they are hostile to pilgrims

Go straight to the Municipal!!!

For 15 euros you get a gorgeous, wonderful, newly redecorated Albergue that feel more like a home. Stone floors, white walls, pastel lockers, single bath for 3 bunks. This is nicer than my new home! Hope this is a trend. To welcome peregrinos in style! The paint might still be a bit wet!

Food in El Real

At least 1 supermarket open when we arrived. Ate bocadillo near clock tower and others at albergue went to restaurant for lunch. Appears to be plenty to eat at least on weekdays.

Municipal Albergue is closed

The municipal albergue at the entry to the town is currently closed to pilgrims. The next albergue is just a few steps down the camino and is open, along with others like Alojamiento Molino, which is family run. (Alojamiento Molino has been in service to pilgrims for more than 80 years!)
