Services

Espinal (Aurizberri in Basque) is a compact village in the valley of the Erro river, with a couple of bars, a small albergue, and a welcoming atmosphere. Between here and Pamplona you'll notice villages perched above the valley floor — a pattern driven by the need to keep fertile riverside farmland available for crops while building homes on higher, more defensible ground.

The parish church retains some Romanesque elements. The village is a good stopping point if Roncesvalles was full or if you want a shorter first day.

Fiesta:

Village festival on the last Sunday in August.

History:

Espinal was founded specifically to protect pilgrims. This river valley has a long history of battle and banditry, and the Navarrese kings — in this case Teobaldo II in the 13th century — established fortified settlements along the route to provide safe passage. The founding charter explicitly mentions protection of pilgrims as its purpose.

Haizea

Private room was great. We decided not to go with the pilgrim meal but instead went with the regular menu and the food was excellent. Great stay over all.

Food at Haizea

I wouldn’t recommend the pilgrim menu here. I ate here yesterday and unfortunately neither I nor the other people at my table enjoyed the food. We also felt it was quite poor value for money. Based on our experience, I’d recommend eating somewhere else.

Another great sleepingaddress, not in the app

Another lovely place to stay! If you’re looking for an affordable private room for one, two or three people, I can highly recommend Casa Patxikuzuria. I paid just €30 for a private double room, so I assume it’s around €15 per person — and perhaps even a little less in the triple room. It has everything you need, is very comfortable, and the hostess is absolutely wonderful: incredibly kind and welcoming. A little Camino gem! ❤️

Basque Irati

Delicious food and friendly staff, playful & uplifting music with large places to sit outside and inside. A wonderful atmosphere and welcoming stop.

Txalaparta cafe

Great place to stop for breakfast. Good choice of food and the owner is very welcoming. He is also a fountain of knowledge.

Jatetxea Bar Restaurante

This little bar off the Main Street, Calle San Bartolome, was open as we walked through before 10 am serving fantastic coffee, pastries, tortilla, fresh fruit, and several fried egg dishes that looked delicious! We had a couple cafes, fruit, and a pastry and then had him wrap up two jamon y queso bocadillos for lunch later. Clean toilets, classical music playing on the patio - a lovely morning stop! Very nice proprietor. He said it’s been a tough couple years with COVID hitting the pilgrim trade, so stop in and support him! (And WAY better coffee than our breakfast at Hotel Roncesvalles - next time I’d just wait and eat breakfast here!)
