Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

The most overlooked curiosity on any camino may be the Castaño de Baamonde — a 500-year-old chestnut tree standing next to the Iglesia de Santiago, just meters from the camino. Get close and you'll discover the hollow interior has been carved into a gallery of figures by a local sculptor, Víctor Corral, who took up the project in protest when the town planned to cut the damaged tree down. His house and museum are just up the road.

Two routes lead out of Baamonde, both suitable and rejoining shortly after. A newer alternative route diverges at San Breixo — 10 km shorter than the old way through Miraz and Sobrado, but with no services. The owners of the KM111 bar in Baamonde can provide the latest details.

Notice:

There are two routes to chose from when leaving Baamonde, but neither are related to a new alternative route that appears in San Breixo. Both routes from Baamonde are suitable and rejoin just out of town.

Beyond the two options out of town mentioned above, there will soon be another very important deviation when you get to San Breixo. There is a bit of controversy surrounding this option, based mostly on the opposition voiced by business and albergues along the old route. For now there appears to be a bit of an agreement that the old way will remain.

However the new way does exist and it is a full 10km shorter, a distance that tells you just how indirect the old way was. The best and most up to date description of the new way can be gotten from the owners of the KM111 bar in Baamonde.

Essentially this new option begins in A Fonte and bypasses both Miraz AND Sobrado, though there is an option along it to get back to Sobrado if you wish. The two options rejoin in Boimil. This new route is marked, but there are no services along the way.

Fiesta:

La Virgen del Rosario de Baamonde is celebrated on the 11th of September.

The Camino:

There is one roundabout in the center of Baamonde, and from it you have two options. To the right is the official camino, and to the left is an alternative complementaria route. The complementaria route has the benefit of avoiding the road in favor of a trail.

Take the complimentario route!

Unless you really, really need to save a kilometer, take the complimentario route out of Baamonde. (Entrance to the trail is past the supermarket on the other side of the street.) It’s incredibly beautiful and serene and saves you from walking along a busy and noisy road.

Greatest place to stay – Parga Natura Alojiemento

About 8 km past Baamonde on the upper alternative way is this gem of a mountain house retreat. Well appointed, could be a high-end vacation home, and takes in pilgrims. Delicious communal dinner, beautiful surroundings, extremely gracious and helpful hosts. And not only includes breakfast, but a bagged lunch for everyone to take. Definitely book ahead!

New, small hostel near Baamonde

"Acogida Los Globetrotters"
We found this small, very cosy hostel via "Gronze". It was opened just a few days ago by a very friendly and attentive couple (Andrea and Fran). It is only about 500 metres from the Camino. There is room for 10 guests. They offer a communal dinner and breakfast. There is free Wi-Fi, a fridge with cold drinks, a kettle for tea, a coffee machine and laundry can be done on request.
All on a donation basis.
We had a very relaxing and restful stay there and can only recommend this private pilgrims' hostel.

Leaving Baamonde

We took the road option, and though it was easy km on tarmac, it was long and monotonous along a fast road. River route might be a lot nicer.

There are services along the new way

There is a bar/shop at 7 km from Parga. Also at 17 km from Parga in Suavila ( next to the church, 150 m detour from the route).

No ATM

Just a heads up there is no ATM here and the nearest one after is Sabrado 40km away . Get cash before if required.

Hostal Esmeralda

It’s a truck/lorry/camion stop outside of Baamonde and is very basic. No Wi-Fi in rooms and the restaurant is closed on Sunday. The adjacent restaurant is ok and the manager is friendly and helpful. Stop at the supermercado in town before going to the hostal if you need supplies.

Delicious meal at KM101 in Baamonde

Whether you stay there or just want a break the restaurant at KM101 in Baamonde has delicious hot meals, the menu del dia was amazing Gallego classics.

Parga Natura is wonderful place to stay on shorter route

Not only is the new route wonderful, so scenic and shorter, there are services. About 7km from Baamonde is Parga Natura (84km to Santiago) a beautifully remodeled historic home with 7 rooms, delightful owners who offer excellent hot menu (optional) and breakfast included in precisely the right location for those who want to go further than Baamonde. There are also small shops in Parga village, plus two bars with hot food between here and Sobrado. The app should build out this new route since the info about the towns that follow are only from the older, longer route.

The new route.

The new route from baamonde to sobrado is well marked. And as the comment above mentions there is a place at the 77 mark for snacks etc. The surface is a mixture of tarmac, packed dirt, clay and genuine trail. A lot of scenic variety. The mileage from baamonde using the complementaria and then joining this route - which doesn’t add more than a KM clocks at 37km. So the person who did this in three hours (see above) is worth capturing and dissecting in a lab. For me it took 6 hours and I was bombing.

Leaving Baamonde

I really recommend the new route. It’s mostly a back country road with gorgeous scenery. At about the 77 km mark (the monument numbers change when you take this route) is a place for something to eat and drink. The walk for me was about 3 hours. Really pleasant owners and the food was great. It’s called Taberna de Nodia. Buen Camino!

Shuttleservice

The beautiful owners of the little hotel Bi Terra have a great shuttle service. You may walk as long as you like and they will pick you up at any place between Baamonde and Sobrado.

The route on the map is incorrect. It appears to follow the bicycle path, but had a lot of carretera and is not well marked - there aren’t any of the stone posts with the km. listed, only occasionally arrows.

Congratulations to Neria and

Congratulations to Neria and Javier for 11 years of success with Hotel Biterra. They have created a high end rural experience near Miraz/Friol with delicious local and Basque Country food. Highly recommend staying here! It’s a taxi ride from the Camino to their hotel and you can stay multiple nights while you walk from Baamonde to Sabrado. They provide the pick ups and drop offs in the fee. Both speak English well. #travelistaliz
