Camino del Norte App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

The Boimorto albergue is located 600 m before town. From A Gándara the camino splits into three routes, all of which eventually join the Camino Francés near the Santiago airport. Choose based on your priorities.

The New Official Route (28.3 km to San Paio, 40.7 to Santiago) goes directly to Lavacolla — the shortest path. Few services and no albergues. Follow the AC-0603 out of town.

Via Brea / O Pedrouzo (30.5 km to San Paio, 42.9 to Santiago) joins the Francés near O Pedrouzo. A turnoff 9.9 km from A Gándara leads to Brea; miss it and you can still reach O Pedrouzo via the N-624.

The Old Official Route via Arzúa (35.8 km to San Paio, 48.2 to Santiago) reaches the Francés earliest and has the most services. Turn left at the end of A Gándara onto the AC-0602. Arzúa is 9.7 km.

Consider that the Francés may be quite crowded — the Norte's relative solitude ends when you join it.

The Camino:

The camino beyond Boimorto splits into three distinct routes before each joins the Camino Francés. All three re-join near the Lavacolla airport. From A Gándara you have to choose between two options, the third option is a derivation of one of the two.

When choosing between the options consider that the Camino Francés may be quite busy depending on the season; relative to the Camino del Norte there are a great deal more pilgrims on the way.

All distances shown are from A Gándara to San Paio, which is the first village after the Lavacolla airport. The number in [brackets] is the distance remaining to Santiago.

‌Option 1: ‌The NEW OFFICIAL ROUTE - 28.3 [40.7]

The new official route goes from A Gándara directly to Lavacolla where it joins the Camino Francés; this is the shortest route to Santiago. There are very little services along the way (a few bars, and one Pension) and no albergues as of yet. Be prepared for a long day, and follow the AC-0603 straight out of town.

‌Option 2: ‌VIA BREA / O Pedrouzo - 30.5 [42.9]

Along the way there is an option to rejoin the Camino Francés near Brea, and the next large town along the Camino Francés from this point is O Pedrouzo. The turn towards Brea occurs 9.9km from A Gándara. If you miss the turn, it is not necessary to retrace your steps. Instead keep on this trail until you reach the N-624 (another 7.3km). Shortly after joining it a paved road marked O Pedrouzo turns left, follow it to the start of O Pedrouzo.

To Brea is 17.9km and to O Pedrouzo 23.5km.

‌Option 3: ‌The OLD OFFICIAL ROUTE - 35.8 [48.2]

The old route to rejoin the Camino Francés in Arzúa is still marked and still walkable. It is the longer of the two options but has a lot more services to offer because it reaches the Camino Francés sooner.

To follow this route, turn left at the end of A Gándara to follow the AC-0602 in the direction of Arzua.

You will pass the hamlet of Sendelle along the way.

To Arzua is 9.7km.

Albergue Casa da Gandara is a gem!

Lovely old townhouse, the most I felt on the Camino that I was staying in someone’s private home. Maribel is lovely and very helpful. Slept like a baby. Highly recommended!
And café Bobby – a few hundred meters before Casa Gandara – is terrific, worth backtracking in the morning – delicious coffee, and free churros!

Twin Pines Hostel in Goimil

I highly recommend this quaint and lovely hostel with semi-private rooms. It’s very clean. If you follow the true Norte route you will end in a town Goimil before you head south to join other pilgrims from France’s in Lavacolla. It’s a quiet and peaceful walk with shades of trees.

Boimorto = pilgrim desert on Sundays

Plan carefully if you are staying in Boimorto on a Sunday. Almost no restaurants are open, and those that are only do so with food at suppertime (from the ones we tried, anyway.) All supermercados are closed. There was a godsend of a bakery (O Forno de Aldea) that had amazing empanadas and Croissants. This closes at 230pm.
We decided to forego staying at the public hostel to avoid the 2kms extra walking to go get food and backtrack back to the hostel-- and I'm SO HAPPY we did. We ended up staying at Casa Da Gándara. Maribel is so nice!!

Option 1 is lovely

If you're okay with a shorter day and enjoy walking with basically zero people, option 1 is for you! Yes, it has more asphalt than would be optimal, but we appreciated the gravel road after the crossroads where there is an option to go to Brea. We did 12.5km from Boimorto to Casa Rico de Medín, where we arrived at 12 noon. Other pilgrims who had passed us had already eaten lunch when we arrived, so they must open around 11 or so. We are staying here tonight, having reserved a room via Booking a while ago, and everything has been lovely. It's another 18km to Lavacolla and 10 or so to Santiago; those who wish for a longer day could do those 28kms in one go.

Why I don’t recommend Option 1

It makes me sad to write this because we thought we chose the best option for us, taking option 1 from Boimorto but wish we’d gone via Arzua instead. I hope it will be helpful to provide a description. For the first 2km there is a path on the left side of the road to the football stadium, after which you walk on tarmac road. The road is cambered for drainage so be careful of those ankles! At around 7.5km (around 34km mark) there is a chapel with a water fountain and benches opposite. From the crossroads at 11km (the 30km mark) the road changes from tarmac to gravel. Cafe at Casa Rico de Medín closed when we passed (11am) - check hours on Google (I posted a photo of opening hours). After around 21km (22km mark) Estanco Bar Suarez has a good bar and grocery store (first open bar / cafe we encountered since Boimorto). There is very little shade on this route, which we struggled with in 30 degree sun. You are separated from the road along most of the route, on a gravel path on the left side of the road. There is a Repsol service station around 27km in (?km mark), but I don’t recommend trying to cross the road to it. We followed the digital map provided with our Cicerone book and it brought us on a wrong route after the Repsol garage so take care and follow the official signs. Overall, we wish we hadn’t tried to avoid the Frances and just taken the old route to Arzua. Hope this helps someone.

The road to o Pedrouzo

It is unmarked
At the end of the road just before the a-54, there is a dead end sign. You need to turn right and follow the side elroad over the highway. The app map is wrong

Option 1 Blue route

From Boimorto you have 9km of well signed road walking. Narrow road but not too much traffic. At the 4km mark there is a bar, not sure of days and times of opening. At the 7km mark there is a chapel with a fountain on the opposite side of the road. At 9kms you reach a small town and there is a bed and breakfast “Twin Pines” just before. At the 12km mark there is a small town with a beautiful, newly renovated Casa Rural (Casa Rico de Medín) which also has a bar. Really beautiful establishment and great coffee, looks like a lovely place to stay. The road eventually joins the N634 (very busy with big trucks etc) but mostly has a gravel path on the left side so you don’t have to take the shoulder. At about the 22km marker, Wise Pilgrim blue dots tell you to keep on the road over a little bridge but the road is narrow and it’s not safe. Follow the camino markers instead which take you away from the road (about 100m) over a little bridge and behind some buildings and puts you back beside the road again. Much safer. Round the corner there is a cafe (Cafe Suarez). Route then has gravel paths beside the road right up until the junction with the Camino Frances.

Option 2

Es gibt eine kleine Bar in Cabrita. Sehr freundlich und auch wenn der Weg nur Asphalt bietet, ist er für mich die große Ruhe vor dem großen Frances-Sturm.

Casa rico pension is 12km into the long route 1

10km to Arzua NOT 2

The kilometers are off on this app by about 7km compared to all of the mile markers through Galicia. It’s because from Boimorto to Arzua it should read 10km instead of 2. It’s correct in the actual book. Hard discovery at the end of my day to realize I had 7km more and running out of time to check in to Albergue. I hope this gets fixed.

Option 2

I took option 2 today. Only asfalt the whole stage until Brea. (my poor feet)
Lot of crazy car and even bus drivers, didn’t slow down for a pilgrim. No bars/cafés.
On the positive side: I hardly didn’t see anyone until I joined the Francés just before Brea.

25. July 2021 - 12:47

new place

if you go route 1, 12km after Boimorto there is Casa Rico de Medín, so you can get coffee food etc, no need to carry water and food for 27km

12. September 2019 - 23:28

we walked option 1 today.

we walked option 1 today. option 1 is the shortest way between monasterio sobrado and lavacolla. the path is well indicated all the time (km stones and arrows). be careful not to miss them (sometimes when tired one walks on, and actually should have gone left/right). from boimorto: soon after, a bar. then no bars at all, until stone km 21. also a bar at stone km 22 (not easy to see; it’s off the road a little, in what looks like a house). it’s a loong walk; be prepared for almost no bars in option 1. we arrived in lavacolla: total i believe 42 km from monasterio sobrado.

The local hostel just before

The local hostel just before biomorto is excellent, it’s super clean, has great showers, and is only 6 euro. Very few pilgrims stay there so you will probably have a whole room to yourself.
