Villafranca del Bierzo is one of the great Camino towns — a place with enough history, architecture, and atmosphere to justify a rest day. It sits where the Río Burbia meets the Río Valcarce, and the town's position at the entrance to the mountain pass toward Galicia made it a critical stop for medieval pilgrims.
The Iglesia de Santiago, at the entrance to town, has the Puerta del Perdón — the Door of Pardon. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims who were too ill or injured to continue to Santiago could receive the same indulgences here by passing through this door. Villafranca earned the nickname 'the little Compostela' for this reason. The church is Romanesque, simple, and worth a pause — even if you're healthy enough to continue.
The Calle del Agua (Water Street) is the main pilgrim thoroughfare, climbing through the old quarter past churches, noble houses, and the Castillo-Palacio de los Marqueses de Villafranca, a fortress-palace that dominates the skyline.
The Colegiata de Santa María houses a polychrome Immaculate Conception statue. The Iglesia de San Francisco, attributed to the saint himself during a pilgrimage to Santiago, has a fine Mudéjar ceiling.
Multiple albergues, hotels, and restaurants serve the town. The Ave Fénix albergue and its associated restaurant have long been Camino favorites. Wine from the Bierzo is cheap and good. All services available: pharmacy, ATM, supermarket.
The road from Villafranca through the Valcarce valley has limited services in places. Stock up before leaving. The climb to O Cebreiro begins in earnest after Las Herrerías.
The Fiesta del Cristo de la Esperanza in mid-September is the main celebration. San Lorenzo on August 10.
The name tells the story: Villafranca — 'town of the Franks' — was settled by French pilgrims and merchants in the 11th century. Its position at the gateway to the mountain pass into Galicia made it a natural gathering point for pilgrims preparing for the final mountain crossing.
The Puerta del Perdón at the Iglesia de Santiago was granted its privileges by papal bull, making Villafranca one of only a few places on the Camino where the full Santiago indulgence could be obtained without reaching Compostela.
The camino leaves Villafranca through the Calle del Agua and follows the Río Valcarce upstream toward Galicia. An alternate route via Pradela takes a higher, more scenic path — see the variant description. The main route follows the valley floor, sometimes alongside the road.

It's the best one I've stayed in since I started from St Jean. Double accommodation

One of the best places to stay! Beautiful private room and one of the best evening meals on the Camino Francis Route located in Villafranca! The service was above excellent!

After walking 26 km do you dream about food? I do. That’s when I arrive at Viña Femita. At 2 pm. Juan is the person who host you. He is absolutely nice. Offered me a caña. Super! When I asked for food. He took me to the restaurant. It had a real comfort food. The best I had in 590 km.

Take ruta dragonte for a real challenge with beautiful views and solitude on the otherwise busy Camino trail.
Make sure to download a gps map to aid with the route as way marking is limited

Maria and het mother are pelgrim angels.
The place is fantastic and they are doing everything they can to make everybody happy and comfortable.
I asked Maria if there might be a shop where they would sell toe socks.
Then a box came along leaving stuff under the counter and I was so lucky to get my toe socks 😀
For the beds, you get cotton sheets and they help you with the laundry.
Thanks to Maria and her family for this wonderful stay.
Don't skip this place 😉

This albergue is really the best I have been during the camino. No bunkbeds, blankets, great shower, very friendly staff, good food and not expensive (16 euro for a bed, 15 euro dinner).
7. May 2024 - 15:58
By far the best albergue I’ve stayed at. Honestly, better than some of the hostales and pensiones I’ve stayed in as well. Comfortable beds (no bunk beds) all with their own light and outlet, large and clean showers, tasty food. Cannot recommend enough!

We couldn’t believe we had the address correct when we limped into Villafranca and found ourselves in front of a massive and ornate stone building that looked like a palace. Inside there are painted murals and massive staircases and beautiful stone arches down the wide hallways. A beautiful interior courtyard to relax and enjoy a restful afternoon. Our room was great - twin beds and private bathroom and no more expensive than the usual private pensión or albergue rooms we’ve stayed in.
This was a highlight of the trip for us!

Echoing the comments re Viña Femita. Such an excellent Albergue, thought i was in the wrong place for a second. There is also no curfew as long as you come in respectfully to the other guests.

For some reason Albergue Viña Femita isn’t listed in the app at this time, but it does show up in booking.com. The owner,Juan, is wonderful & makes you feel like family. His mother cooks the meals & the wine is from his father’s vineyard. No bunk beds, clean sheets & blanket on every bed, spacious bathrooms (separate men’s/women’s), plenty of sinks, toilets & showers, good showers with large dry area outside shower door to change in privacy. Washer & dryer available (4 euros each). Good pilgrim meal available also.
18. June 2023 - 20:25
The layout is great: airy, spacious and single beds. Good shower. But what makes this a standout is the owner, Juan, who is so kind and attentive. I was feeling sad because I lost my Camino crew but Juan’s warmth made me feel right at home. The food was great too.
15. June 2023 - 22:27
Currently not in the list: Famely driven Albergue Fiña Fernita (available via bookingcom) is fantastic! Near to the center of town, single beds, clean and lots of space - not only in the dormatories. Dinner is fantastic, mother is cooking. Host is one of the best i met on the camino so far, and i started in St Jean. If you want to do yoursef a favour stay here, you'll not regret it :)

This was a gem of an albergue. Most notably, the proprietor Juan is the nicest person I’ve met in a walk full of nice people!
Beds were twin (no upper bunk) and spaced well apart, and the bathrooms were wheelchair accessible. Food was good and we were each given a half bottle of wine! The garden is beautiful with palm trees and sculptures.

Danny at Micro Hostel Puerta del Perdon is the most accommodating and friendly host. The food is amazing, service is fabulous, we loved our time here.
20. April 2023 - 17:08
As you leave Villafranca you will see that a new sidewalk is being installed outside the city, extending for maybe 2 to 3 KMs. This will be a safer experience m.

El Castillo albergue was closed for the season despite saying all year. The restaurant on the corner called El Castillo was so so helpful and wonderful! The owner helped us find an open hostel and gave directions to get there, food and wine is amazing with great prices and very kind people and good service. Highly recommend!

This albergue stands out because of how Maria and her mother would go over and beyond in making sure that the pilgrims get a comfortable stay. They’ve been running the place for 9 years and are clearly happy in what they do. Great location, fireplace, spotless rooms and amenities, reasonable price for washer and dryer. The kitchen is a bit small but our overall experience was just amazing!
