Services

This is where the Via de la Plata splits. Left takes you west on the Camino Sanabres toward Ourense and Santiago -- 366 km of mountain and valley through Galicia. Straight ahead takes you north to Astorga -- 94 km of meseta -- where you join the Camino Frances for the remaining 257 km to Santiago.

Neither option is inherently better. The Sanabres is quieter, greener, and hillier. The route to Astorga is flatter, drier, and connects you to the busiest camino in Spain. Most pilgrims who've walked from Seville make their choice here based on instinct, weather, and how they feel about walking the Frances.

The terrain ahead to Astorga is honest meseta -- wide open farmland, long straight paths, small villages with minimal services, and big skies. The landscape doesn't change dramatically between here and La Baneza, roughly 70 km north. What it lacks in variety it makes up for in space and solitude.

The Camino:

The Camino Sanabrés turns left and due west from Granja. It follows farm tracks to reach the Puente Quintos (6.7km) over the Río Esla. Once over the bridge, the river splits into two distinct routes to get to Faramontanos de Tábara. The right route follows the road and is preferred when rains have been heavy. Follow the road to the first paved left turn to descend and rejoin the left route. The left route turns left at the end of the bridge to follow a more scenic trail along the river.
