Services

El Cubo is the first town in the province of Zamora that pilgrims on the Via de la Plata reach, and it marks the entrance to the Tierra del Vino -- the Land of Wine. The name is a bit of a tease these days: the phylloxera plague of the late 19th century wiped out most of the vineyards, and very few vines remain. But you'll still see old bodegas around town, reminders of a time when winemaking was the economic backbone of this entire region.

The town sits on what was once a Roman mansio (way station) known as Sabaria. There's a shop, a pharmacy, a couple of cafes on the main road, and private albergue accommodation. It's not a place that will keep you long, but it's a practical stop.

History:

The Tierra del Vino de Zamora is a designated wine region that extends over nearly 1,800 square km across 46 municipalities in Zamora province and 10 in Salamanca. Wine cultivation was the principal support of the rural economy here until well into the 20th century. The region received its Denominacion de Origen in 2007, and a handful of wineries have revived production -- primarily Tempranillo reds that are worth seeking out if you find a bottle.

The Camino:

The camino continues straight through El Cubo on the main road, crosses a short bridge, and turns left onto a secondary road. The walking ahead is through open agricultural land toward Villanueva de Campean.

Accommodating

I arrived past 1:00 pm and I was very hungry. I asked for something to eat and they immediately served some food. Thank you very much, Filiberto Hernandez Pablos. €35 for accommodation, dinner, and breakfast included. And the WiFi is very fast, I measured it with Ookla and almost got a 1Gbps speed. Highly recommended

Albergue - Excellent

Albergue Torre de sabre is gem! The food (extra cost) is excellent clean rooms with heating and a very helpful chap. To me this is a traditional Albergue. Small bar in the village was busy with locals but sold snacks for the next day. The tienda was only open until 13:30 unfortunately. ScottG UK

Torre de Sabre is a highlight of the route

I stayed at Torre de Sabre in 2022, during the 1,225km walk that would form the basis of my book - 'Vagabond: A Hiker's Homage to Rural Spain' - and have stayed twice since (while researching for a new Lonely Planet guidebook). I consider an evening enjoying Filiberto's unique (and very warm) brand of hospitality to be a highlight of the region. Don't miss it. (And, if you're brave enough, try to sample the local stewed cock's combs!) - Mark Eveleigh (from UK)

Supermarket is Closed

The market has closed. Pharmacy has very limited days and hours. The bar was busy and poured a generous glass!

Albergue Torre de Sabre 12/05/23

I stayed at this hostel in Aug 22 in the main building which was great, last night I stayed in an Annex building about 100m away which does not have WiFi, curtains - 2 bathrooms were old and below par as such disappointed to be honest.

Having said that, this is the only Albergue in the area and the pricing is higher

Translated pricing FOR 2023

HI (one person) + dinner + breakfast = 42€

Pak in shared room, one person, bed + dinner + breakfast = 32

Pak HD (two people) + dinner + breakfast = 68€

Bed in shared room = 18€

HI (one person) = 29€
HD (two people) = 40€

Dinner 13€
Breakfast 4,00€

I had an excellent meal for EUR12 at the local bar which is open till 4pm currently.

Thumbs up for Albergue Turistico Torre de Sabre

I stayed last night - 18/5/22 - at Albergue Turistico Torre de Sabre. It was a wonderful albergue. It’s located on the edge of the town and is very quiet. Filiberto, the host, was so welcoming and very helpful. Substantial washing lines for the hiking gear. The communal dinner outside was fantastic - beautiful food and great company from fellow pilgrims. Breakfast was set out in the dining room - coffee, toast, juice - for any time you needed to hit the road - much appreciated. Filiberto has everything completely sorted for pilgrims - I thoroughly recommend this albergue. Jenny from Australia.
