Camino Francés
12.5 km, 79 m up and 486 m down, through 2 places, 1 of which has somewhere to sleep. Where you stop is up to you.
Every place on the path in order, with the distance from Riego de Ambrós. Most are too small to sleep in — a fountain, a chapel, a bar that may or may not be open — but they are what the day is actually made of.
A small village on the steep descent between El Acebo and Molinaseca. A bar and a basic albergue provide services. The slate-roofed houses continue the mountain architecture. The descent doesn't let up here — your knees …
The walking from Molinaseca to Ponferrada is flat and suburban — about 7 km along the river valley. The mountain drama is behind you; the Bierzo valley lies ahead.
A small village between Molinaseca and Ponferrada with a bar. The camino passes through on the river-valley route. The walking is flat and easy, with Ponferrada's suburbs appearing ahead.
Leaving Ponferrada, the camino navigates the western suburbs through Compostilla, Columbrianos, and Fuentes Nuevas before reaching open country. The urban exit is long but well-marked. The Bierzo valley, with its vineyards and orchards, stretches ahead.
Distance, climb and descent are measured along the GPS track for this camino — 173 recorded points across this span, the same track the app carries. The town-to-town figures in my data put it at 11.8 km.
