Camino del Norte App

Pilgrims on the road and friends along the way send me changes every day, and they go out the same day. The Camino del Norte app carries all of it offline, and it's still being built — new features arrive routinely.

Services

Both the hotel and the bar are at the far end of town, past the river crossing. The camino joins the N-632a briefly, crosses a roundabout and the river, then picks up a trail on the right for the climb out of the valley.

The Camino:

Arriving at the few industrial buildings that signal your arrival in Canero, the camino joins the N-632a briefly. It passes through a roundabout and over the river, and then resumes along a trail on your right. From here you begin climbing back out of the valley, and along the way you pass the hotel and restaurant adjacent to the road. It is possible to stay on the road from the hotel, but there are trails that shortcut the switchbacks in the road and which take you back up to (and under) the A-8. The majority of the walk between here and Barcia is along the N-634.

Hotel Camaro, ALTERNATIVE ROUTE! 😕

The entry above on June 28th 2019 is correct there is a route to avoid the hairpin turn on N634 and continue on to the Camino. It is well marked but can be confusing obviously because Wise Camino is not being maintained to show alternative routes that do have Camino markers. So users beware this is not the only time the map can be wrong.

5 min to the beach, free towel.

Good albergue, very close to a beautiful beach.
There is restaurant and tortilla and empanadas out of the meal time.
They provide soap and towel but no cover for the mattress.

Albergue playa de cueva

The lowest point has been reached. We have rarely been treated so unkindly as in this albergue. After we had registered and paid, we were sent away to the albergue with a wave of the arm. We got here by walking outside to the back of the hotel/restaurant that the owners also run. We slept on the plastic of the mattresses; we were not given any sheets. There was nothing in the kitchen downstairs. There was no kettle and no coffee or tea. Dinner cost €18. It was very tasty and the lady who served us was very nice. When we wanted to leave the restaurant after dinner it was raining and hailing terribly. When we asked if we could walk to the albergue via the hotel, he indicated that the customer of today was spoiled. He mockingly asked if he should order a taxi. We were forced to walk outside through the pouring rain. We also paid far too much for breakfast the next day, respectively €4.30 for a cup of coffee and two toasted rolls. The albergue called beach cave (playa de cueva) lives up to its name. We will never come back here.

Bring cash to hotel canero bar

Man at hotel Canero bar was very upset that we didn’t have cash to pay for snacks, despite having a card reader. We offered to buy something more so our bill was above 10 euros (which apparently was the minimum, despite no signage anywhere), and then he told us that he bet that we actually had the cash and were lying… not super welcoming. Bring cash to avoid this, I suppose. Or skip the place and find somewhere more welcoming.

Coastal Alternative

You really should take the coastal alternative described below. If you are insecure qbout finding the right way just download the app maps.me and you see all the way. Also there are signs on the way which tell you it is the ruta dr lq cangrexa. When we were there everything was wet from the night, it was a little bit slippery but not too much and also you could see that there are not many people walking there in the beginning. The views are amazing!!!!

Spectacular coastal alternative

The second you cross river esva look for the riverside trail to the right. This is what wise pilgrim suggests but is not
Indicated by the arrows. Follow it all the way down to playa cueva ignoring the shell which will take you left instead of right. At the beach go to sand and go left. Go to where the pebbles meet the sand and you’ll see a trail going up the hillside. Follow it to the top. Take a right and follow along the cliff top. Now you are on the ruta del cangrexa. Amazing views at every turn back over Cabo busto and hidden beaches forests etc etc. It includes a couple
Of descents and climbs but pretty chill. In the wet might be entirely different story.

Just after Hotel Canaro on

Just after Hotel Canaro on the right side there is the original stone marked path it’s lovely and gets you off the N634 onto a shady trail when you hit the road again look across for the next trail you eventually hit the A8 proceed along crossing a bridge over the A8 and you eventually hit the blue line again following the old Camino stones all the way .

Hotel Canero also has a Pilgrim Albergue attached to the hotel with 18 beds at 10 euro. The Albergue is new and has a fully equipped kitchen with washer and dryer and a large patio with plenty of tables.
