Services

A Rúa de Valdeorras has all services — restaurants, markets, wineries, accommodation, and a tourist office with sello, often staffed by local Camino Amigos group members. Stock up here for the next day's walk.

The municipal polideportivo in the riverside Agullón park is currently available for pilgrims. It's 1 km from the town hall — on weekdays, go directly between 3 and 10 pm; on weekends, call the local police at 696 91 75 94. Bar O Refuxio next door is recommended for its BBQ.

Hotel and restaurant O Pillabán (Praza Enriqueta Casanova 11, tel. 988 311 416 / WhatsApp 627 89 10 04) is right on the camino near the church. Rooms for pilgrims are 20 euros, and the food is highly rated.

Casa Rural Pacio do Sil (Calle Xestal 33) is outside the main town — a bit pricey but well worth it. For food, Bar Taxi, Restaurante A Lareira, and Bar Pepa near the ayuntamiento are all recommended. On Sundays and on the 7th of each month, Amalia sets up her pulpo stall outside Bar Bravo.

Notice:

From A Rúa to Quiroga there are not many services. Carry extra water and food. Fountains have been reported just past Alvaredos, at Montefurado, and two in Bendilló.

The Camino:

Leave A Rúa by climbing Calle Currelada to the church of Our Lady of Fátima (look for the slate-roofed twin towers). Head for the N-120 — arrows take you right and beneath the highway. Upon leaving the tunnel, make an immediate left.

There are now 7 km of asphalt walking on the OU-933 (becoming the LU-933 as you cross into Lugo province). There's virtually no traffic. On a clear day, the walk above the Río Sil is exceptionally beautiful.

Hostal Niza is open and a time capsule worth a stay

I tried to get a room at Pillaban but they were booked out by a wedding. Coincidentally the bride and her maid of honour came out of the hostal door just as I was trying to find somewhere else. I ended up walking down the hill to Niza (that’s what it’s listed as on Apple Maps) and rang the bell. No answer so I called and got a very brief confirmation that they had a room and then the line was cut.

I stood outside wondering if I should call back and just as I’d given up hope the oldest Spanish man I’ve ever seen came to the door (very very slowly) and gave me the heartiest welcome. He then sent me up to flights of stairs where his wife (I assume, and also quite old and bent over) took over the conversation. Up to the third floor and a lovely single room and a shared toilet, bidet and bathroom.

The room and the public areas are a microcosm of Franco Spain. It’s amazing. However in the corner of this very 1950’s single bed hotel room is a modern, brand new (?) shower, sink, towel holder and mirror. The windows are new PVC double glazed too. And there’s no WiFi and no air conditioning. But the bath tub etc are all mine as there’s no one else on this floor.

Despite wanting to stay at Pillaban because of other’s reviews, I’m pretty glad to be here in this rather interesting slightly updated throwback to another time. And my hosts are lovely. I can only hope to be as agile and curious and welcoming when I reach their age.

Donativo Albergue

Small, really clean Albergue. Just 3 bunk beds and one normal bed in one room. The hospitalero Pepe was so so…. Dinner and breakfast were small. Spaghetti with pesto. Thanks for nothing. It isn’t worth more than 10€.

7. September 2025 - 7:26

Albergue not on list— see other comments as well

We found the donativo albergue on Gronze. It is a wonderful place. The volunteer María went out of her way to make us feel looked after. She made a lovely supper Despite our protests she even got up at 530 to make breakfast

16. July 2025 - 16:53

Municipal Alburgue now opens at 2:30pm

We stayed in the Municipal Alburgue (shown as 'Alburgue de Peregrinos' in Google Maps) in July 2025, and opening hours were from 14:30 to 22:30.
It's as good as everyone else says it is.

5. May 2025 - 18:26

Municipal is one of the best

Although small, it is a great albergue run on a donation basis. The hospitalero, Carmen, made us feel very welcome, cooked a great dinner and had us all laughing
It is a pity it is not on Wise Pilgrim., you have to find it by other apps. It doesn’t open until 4, but you can leave your pack there while you explore A Rua

25. April 2025 - 17:18

Albergue Municipal!!!! Go there and enjoy camino magic

The Municipal is not listed but you can find it on google. is a classic albergue with dinner and breakfast, everything on donation. The host Maria was the sweetest and helpful person. One of my momenta on this camino!!

Municipal albergue is great

We had a wonderfull stay at the municipal albergue. There was a change over in volunteers, and we had a great laugh with the 5 of us. Loren and Antonio made dinner and breakfast, and it was delicious. Thanks for the stay.

Its only a small albergue with 16 beds, 2 showers and 2 toilets, bit it is nice and clean

29. June 2024 - 14:59

Not listed here THE MUNICIPAL IS AMAZING

I don’t know why wise pilgrim doesn’t list it but the municipal albergue is incredible. It’s donativo, with optional dinner and breakfast. What more could you ask for! It’s clean, good showers, great hospitalero. She even kindly came and opened early because she saw I was waiting outside (it normally opens 4pm, I would have been happy lying there!) a real gem.

16. June 2024 - 12:48

Pulpo outside Bravo Lux

It’s 12 noon on a Sunday and I am happy to report Amalia is still there with her pulpo stand. You buy pulpo from her, and bread/potatoes inside the bar :) her pulpo is 9€ for a ration, and bread 2€ in the bar (they didn’t have potatoes ready at this time)

31. May 2024 - 18:05

Donativo Albergue , Opened February 2024.

A lovely welcome, even though we don’t speak Spanish . Clean and comfortable. Dinner is served , plus breakfast, and Pilgrim Dinners are a special way to bring everyone together. So grateful to have this here , please support them . And Donate with your heart and head , so in this lovely town there are other options than hotels for Pilgrims. ❤️

Hotel espada

The public albergue only opens at 4:00. Hotel Espada has single rooms for 27 euros. It’s comfortable and has wifi. May 2024

28. April 2024 - 18:13

No early cafes on a Sunday

Panadería and all of the many cafes in town don’t open until later on a Sunday morning . Stop cafeteria apparently opened at 8. We bought breakfast supplies and lunch from Eroski on Saturday evening and had coffee at the wonderful donativo Nespresso machine in Alvaredos 6 ks into the days walk.

Correction on last post - no laundry at pillaban

Apologies, we stayed at pillaban and ate at the restaurant downstairs, we also had amazing pulpo at the cafe just down the road, but no laundry service. The room was great though

7. February 2024 - 15:09

Hostal Pillaban

We stayed at hostal pillaban, 50 euro for 2 people in a private twin room with bathroom. Supermarkets close by, good restaurant for dinner just next door and there is a cafe/tapas bar just underneath the hostel which we had breakfast at, good coffee, juice and pastries. A good spot to pull up stops after a long walk.
They also offered laundry service (returned to us within 3 hours), which was great.

15. April 2023 - 22:55

Restaurant O Tono Meson

This traditional restaurant at 25 Rua Benito Fernandez, is where the locals go for their menu del dia. The food is simple and fresh, cheap and unpretentious. Expect at least one table to consist of tradesmen in their working clothes, always a good sign in my experience.

9. October 2022 - 20:45

Hostal Niza closed

Could not see any sign of it and phone number seems to be unobtainable

26. May 2022 - 7:29

I Café open from 6am

Great café with lots of breakfast and coffee options.
Open 6am weekdays/7-8am weekends

15. July 2021 - 21:30

The Hostal Pillabán is a good

The Hostal Pillabán is a good option. Very close to the camino and near Asún’s house (former albergue). Nice small old stone building with an excellent restaurant below. Rooms are very clean, excellent bathrooms. Restaurant is closed on Mondays. July 2021 pilgrim paid 22 € for a single room. You can contact them via WhatsApp- +34 627 89 10 04
